Hi we have just recently got a really tiny chihuahua mix Teebo who is gorgeous. The only problem is we have 2 dogs already a border terrier x whos 4 and a 4 month old golden retriever. When we bought Teebo home ( who came from a family with 5 dogs including a great dane and 2 staffies) we held him backwards so that our dogs could sniff him etc and all seemed well until the golden got a bit boisterous and Teebo growled at him. Sonny the golden backed off but now Teebo keeps growling at him and then Otis the border and Sonny both started growling at Teebo and he ran under the sofa so now i won't put him down and keep him either on my lap or in a pen
which i'm sure is the wrong thing to do but he seems so little and i've never had such a small dog before. Any advice on socialiasing them would be much appreciated.

I can't offer advice on socializing but I will tell you you need to protect Teebo from your dogs. Your dogs are capable of seriously hurting or even killing him. Be careful and never leave them alone.

I agree with Finn. We have seen accidents happen unfortunately between large ones and small all too often. The truth is that our chi's are very small and one mis-step or a 'nip' by a big dog could be fatal.

The playpen is a great place for Teebow right now. If you see the other dogs walk up to smell him in the pen, praise, praise. Get a bowl of little treats around the pen. Every time they go to the pen, they get a tiny treat. Before long, being around the puppy will mean a treat. Good luck with him.

I have a great play yard I put the puppes in. It keeps them safe and lets your bigger dogs get used to them. This was my set up:

The play pen can be bought from Petsmart or Amazon. It has been a life saver for me, I have used this pen for so many dogs and puppies. You can open it up and use it as a room gate, too, to keep the puppy in a certain room, off the carpet. I love this pen. :)

Here's the link it it on Petsmart

Shop for this IRIS Indoor/Outdoor Pet Pen in white and more dog pens at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better.

I started out very slowly when I brought my Mini Poodle home. My APBT was used to having a larger playmate (A GSD who weighed 99 pounds, we lost him to cancer) and she was VERY excited to meet her new packmate. Bruce, however was not as keen to meet her. He was very snappy and growly at first. We used a lot of positive reinforcement, and after a few days, he calmed down, and now they are best friends. When we got Jezzie (Chi/MinPin) she was the same way, very defensive and snapped at the other two quite a lot. We made it a game for her to tolerate the other two, if she was nice, she got a treat. Now they all get along just fine :)
