My 11 year old Chi/mix is recovering from back surgery--a ruptured
disc. The vets have told us that it could take 2 weeks for her to
walk again--they give her a 90% chance--however it is now one
week following surgery and Her legs show no life at this point and I am
getting impatient and discouraged. She is voiding mostly on her own
which I am told is connected to her neurological framework (legs)
and once she pees without assistance, her legs may respond later
If you
have had a similar situation
please let me know---is there hope? ---any advice for a heartbroken
owner of this little fur ball.

Have you thought about looking into hydrotherapy?

It is when they place the dog in a tank with a treadmill. They gradually add water and turn the treadmill on so the dog is walking on it with the added support and resistance of the water. It encourages them to use their back legs.

Good luck!

I agree with the hydrotherapy suggestion! Just as with people, physical therapy is a very important component to getting mobility back. Surgery and medications are only PART of the equation.

I have heard of really good results from acupuncture as well in these cases.

Please keep us posted!

Thanks to all who replied to my little Suzy's situation with back surgery.
Sadly today we had to put down our 11 year old friend after the discovery of bladder cancer. I now grieve.....
