HOW OLD IS YOUR CHI & HOW MUCH DO YOU FEED HIM/HER A DAY

My lil Cha-Cha is now 5 months. I've been free feeding her and she eats at her leisure. I'm concerned she may put on alittle poundage if I don't watch it. She's definitly filling out right now. I've heard some people feed their Chi 2 or 3 times a day but I'm not sure of the amount? How old is your Chi and what are your feeding habits for him/her?

Gadget is 16 1/2 weeks and I feed him 4 tablespoons of canned food in the morning and 4 tablespoons of canned food at dinner time and I leave 1/8 cup of dry food in each of his 2 bowls(1 in the bedroom and 1 in the livingroom) some times he doesn't eat all of his dry food. but he usually eats real good for breakfast and dinner... then he will get his treats... I got him weighed today and he is 2 lbs. 8.5 oz. and he is gaining good weight but not to much...
Lina is 10 months and I free feed her. I usually give her about a cup of dry food (Natural Choice) every 2-3 days. She's doing quite well with this. I like for her to always have access to food.
By that age it is safe to start feeding them twice a day. Its great to free feed while they are tiny because they need the food but once they start getting older and start slowing down as far as growing, its best to schedule-feed them. Its the best way to make sure they are eating the right amount of food. It also keeps them pretty regular as far as potty training goes.

I feed my girls twice a day (7am and 7pm) and I feed them Royal Canine Chihuahua Formula.
Tequila gets 1/4 cup each feeding
Ginger and Kylie get a little less then 1/4 cup each feeding

Remember chi's can become overweight very easily and that can cause a lot of health problems down the road.
How much does your chi weight now? Tequila weights around 7lbs and feeding her 1/4 a cup twice a day is just right for her (dry food)
mine are both 18 months and are a good weight 6 pound and 7 pound :

The have the small foil trays (150g size) they have a 1/4 each on a morning and a 1/4 each on an evening , plus I always leave a bowl of dry food down for them to nibble on as I also agree with free feeding as long asyour dog doesnt become glutenous and eat al the food and then expect more lol
I still free feed Charlie, I give him about a 1/2 cup of Royal Canin Mini Puppy in the morning. He eats most of it after I get home in the evening but he doesn't always eat all of it. He's 5.7 lbs. which the vet said was a healthy weight for his size. He gets treats too, when we do our training sessions and when I just feel like giving him a treat.
Frasier is 6 months and 7 pounds.

He eats 1 1/8 cup of Science Diet puppy small bites.
He gets one treat per day which is broken up to be used as pottying-outside rewards. No other types of food, including human.

I feed 2 times per day 5/8 cup morning 1/2 cup afternoon. He doesn't eat it all at once, but munches off and on for several hours on each serving.

When determining the amount, age is not the only factor - weight matters. Use the guide on your dog food bag, then adjust up or down accordingly.
Weight is the big factor when deciding how much to feed. The bag is a great starting point and like you said, you should adjust based on your own dog. If you notice your dog gaining weight when they shouldnt then start knocking down the amount until they balance out and if the amount just seems like not enough then bump it up a bit
Thank you all for your response. I truly appreciate it. I'm sure that this question on feeding has been asked before in a past post.... but it's difficult to find sometimes. So, thank you for taking the time to answer. I also feed Cha-Cha Royal Canine. When I first got her, I picked up Royal Canine (not knowing anything about it except all natural ingredients). It's nice to read that a lot of people feed their dogs the same thing. She loves the stuff. Once again thank you! I am truly enjoying this site
my chi is 3.5 months and she eats 1/2 cup of food a day. i just put it in her bowl and she just snacks on it when she's hungry. with all the energy she has, i wish she'd eat more.
Tader is 5 years old & I free feed him purina one.
