Ok I ate some chicken and forgot and left the plate on the end table and left the room. About 7 or so minutes later i see Finn inthe room , plate is upside down on floor and no bones left at all. *drumstick and thigh* Leila is found licking her lips and we've searched the house and the bones are no where. I do not understand how bones could be eaten that quickly and i'm having a heart attack worrying!!! Ladies please help :crybaby: I feel like such an idiot for forgetting to clean my plate up. DO you think they are ok,? would they show immediate signs of distress if somethiing were to happen?? I'm so worried!!!!!

I had this happen once where my mothers dog ate a chicken wing. She inhaled it once she knew we were coming for it. So don't feel guilty they are masters at this.

I called the vet when this happened and they said that the bones would either be thrown up within 24 hours or pooped out. She said that if their stomach became hard, they strained to poop or threw up more than once with no bone coming up they have to go in to the vet asap.

Within 3-4 hours the dog actually threw up the bone and was 100% fine. I would just do a 48 watch, and make sure they are both having healthy bowel movements.

Hopefully Tracey can chime in with more advice soon

Don't feed them anything you want them to throw it up on their own, and you dont want to give them anything that can bung them up.

It won't be right away if anything happens it's when it fails to pass through their system you have a problem, so I was told

LOL Cheryl. they will probably be just fine. I wouldn't worry. We used to have a dachshund when I was growing up that routinely raided the trash and ate cooked chicken bones. No, I wouldn't advise it. But she was always just fine. The stomach acid in a dogs tummy is super duper strong. I would guess they will digest with no problems at all. I would skip their dinner tonight though. Reassess in the morning. Watch their poop. I wouldn't worry too much.

When to worry....
If a cooked chicken bone causes an impaction in the bowel or an obstruction, these are the signs you will watch for.

Nausea (lip licking).

Walking hunched over with their head close to the ground and their tail tucked under.

Not wanting to lie down.

Getting in the 'pray' or play bow position, with their rump in the air and their chest on the floor (this is an indicator of stomach distress)

Panting with rapid breathing.

If they develop a blockage or have severe intestinal discomfort, YOU WILL KNOW. Otherwise, just keep an eye on them. Watch their poops. Maybe feed very small meals tomorrow. Have your vet on speed dial. (JUST KIDDING) My guess is that they will perfectly fine. :)

Oh my gosh i feel like the worst mommy. :crybaby: I can't stop crying. I would die without my babies. I just went out in the rain with them and got excited but all they did was pee. I did give some white bread. :( I read that it was a good idea to cushion the tummy. Good God i hope i didn't make things worse. :( They are still acting fine. Leila is such a freaking hog. She makes me so mad. I don't know if finn got any or not. But i dont believe they/she ate those bones that fast. I searched the house though and no sign. Unbelievable.!

Cheryl, I can just about GUARANTEE they will be FINE!!!! Dogs eat all kinds of things and they pass on through. Now if they ate rocks or something like that, then you might be worried. Chicken bones will just disintegrate. Raw is better and I would not recommend cooked, but like I said - their stomach acid is really strong. They will pass it. Really. ;)

Tracy is right, if something was wrong you would know by now, you'd see signs,
you can't avoid them trust me. Your pups will be ok. Growing up in Russia dogs
were fed bones from the left over dinner all the time, or the "spoiled" ones were
fed cooked chicken with bones and all. Not saying it's ok, just saying I grew up
around it and the dogs were ok. They'll poop it right out, so please stop blaming
yourself and worrying. Hugs.

Cheryl the same thing has happened here with Ben, not once but twice! He has eaten a cooked chicken drumstick and a cooked wing. My fault :( both times.
He completely chewed them and we never saw them again from either end. He was just fine.
So sorry this happened to you and I know you feel horrible. These crazy little ones with be the death of us. Try to calm down and relax.

Bella ate 2 drumstick bones from KFC when she was around 6-9 months or something, don't remember exactly. She wolfed them down FAST too, those lil turds know when they aren't supposed to be getting into something. I IMed Kristi freaking out too, and she reassured me she would probably be fine. It happens and obviously you don't want them to eat cooked bones, but it's not as horrifying as people make it out to be. She ended up being totally fine, had no issues. I think I gave her some pumpkin to help ease things along. I had worse problems when Izzie decided to chew the foam off our xbox headset.. she scared mommy for a couple days.. :nmad2:

Why can't they just know to never get into anything that would hurt or make them sick? It's so scary everything that can happen to them, and I would die without my girls too.. :(

Odie got a hold of a chicken bone when we were visiting someone's house, out of a really low garbage can. She only ate the tiniest piece of it, but I was freaking out a little, because I had just heard a chicken bone horror story from someone we know, involving her dog that received immediate vet care (I won't share that story right now!). That was about a month ago, and Odie is a-okay! I was on the lookout for any weird symptoms, and on poop watch and everything went smoothly! ;)

Keep us updated Cheryl because we care, but I'm sure like everyone else they will be fine. And if it makes you feel better I am purely ashamed to tell yall what our terrible darling Gidget got ahold of yesterday (notice I said yesterday because I didnt tell on myself when it happened, but we have been worried and watching). She is barely big enough to jump up on certain furniture but that changes daily. Apparently yesterday she was just big enough to jump up in my mom's recliner and get her grubby little paws on a Mr. Clean magic eraser and chew it to spreads! My mother brought it to me having a fit, but none looked missing like she ate it just "killed" it. Boy, you can't take your eyes off of them one minute, and my Mother the clean freak has got to watch her supplies!!!

Cheryl, you might not remember this, but Brody ate a corner off a shamwow towel once! Those chamois type towels that EXPAND when WET?! I freaked out! I was sure it was going to expand in his stomach or his intestines and he'd have to have surgery for an obstruction. I was so worried. Someone told me to give him a few licks of vaseline as it would lubricate his insides and help it move on through, like a laxative. I did that. And yeah, it moved on through alright!! He had diarrhea for 2 days. Poor baby. But guess what.... little dime sized pieces of blue shamwow towel started appearing in his poop! His body disintegrated that towel into little bitty pieces that he could pass easily. He never had a problem at all.

I was worried sick though. So I know exactly how you feel. I'm not saying that sometimes bad things do happen, but in MOST cases - everything just passes through just fine. Our little guys are really quite tough. Hang in there. We are all right here with you.
