I am also a fairly new Chi owner, Poppy has been with me 3 weeks today!
I also had no previous experience with Chi's. I bought Poppy from a dog market in Beijing, not the type of place I would recommend to anyone, but I couldnt resist her!
As no one had recommended any type of food for her, I just went to the local pet store and bought Pedigree puppy food (wet) and puppy bites (kibble) because I knew that Pedigree was a well known brand and thats all there was available here! She has taken to the food well and I am just playing it by ear and learning stuff from the wonderful people in this forum.
I am sure the more experienced people will have suggestions for you...welcome!
Also, there is lots of available info on the web...good luck!

Hi an welcome - so glad you found us

regarding fod im not sure as I live in England so the brands are different . but toys the ones my 2 seem to like best are soft toys like bears etc with squeakers in them - you should be able to find smallish ones for a pup

Congratulations on your new chi! Do you have a name picked out yet? You should definitely start her out with whatever her current owner feeds her - this will keep her tummy from getting too upset with the move and everything. Then you can slowly mix in the new food if you want to change her diet from what the current owner is feeding her.

I feed Bosco and Lola Iams and they really like it. I have heard that Nutro is a good brand as well. I'm sure others will have more info for you. :)

As for toys, get one that will give her puppy teeth a good workout - they also seem to like squeekie toys (ones that are easily squeekable).

Good luck! Be sure to post lots of pictures once you pick her up!

Feed a top quality food, spring water (yes), keep them well groomed, spend time with them training and lovin, get reg vet visits, exercise is important, keep their weight down to prevent future joint/leg/hip problems and come here for tons of great advice :D

Also be careful of heights as chis love to jump and zoom around but they do more harm to themselves than good w/that!!

Welcome!

I fed Grizzly Maximum Nutrition Lamb and Rice for Puppies that I bought at Walmart. The kibble is small and he ate it up like crazy! He now eats the same brand - same lamb and rice formula but the one for adult dogs. The kibble is still the same size which is great.

Our vet recommends that no matter what brand you buy, get lamb and rice. It's very good for them and easy to digest.

Grizzly loves the stuffed toys with squeekers in them. Any rubber toy that is kinda thin/soft---he'll chew it up in no time, so I don't buy any like that. He does have some that are really sturdy, he has a Kong, but it is really thick rubber. My best advise is to get whatever kind of toy you want, then watch very closely to see what works for your baby.

Hello & Welcome Auggie has a variety of toys and plays with them all so I don't think they are too picky. He does love to play fetch with his balls. In fact he will play fetch with any of his toys. Even his monkey that is as big as he is.

Hi and welcome!!!!! I have a list of the top ten dog food products picked out by the Whole Dog Journal...

http://www.allourpets.com/healthyFood/wdg.shtml

As for toys my three just LOVE the Buudah ropes! They will play tug-o-war and chase eachother with them all day long! For some odd reason my girls are scared of the squeeker toys...such babies...lol!

You might want to buy a tube of Nutra-Cal just in case. its a high calorie, high sugar product that is very tasty to your pup. Its in case your pup isnt eating enough. Such tiny dogs like chi's have problems with their blood sugar. It is very easy for their levels to drop and they will then go into hypoglycemic shock! Yes, this can kill them but its very easy to prevent. Feed your pup at least three times a day (I would start feeding 4 times a day for the first month you have her) If you pup is eating very well, then chances are your pup will be fine. If you pup comes home and refuses to eat then give her a pea-sized drop of Nutra-Cal (its like a sticky syrup). It really should only be used ifyou are afraid she is not eating enough and to keep her levels up. I would give a pea-sized drop three times a day to Ginger (my youngest and tiniest chi...was only 0.9lbs when i got her) because I was so afraid she would go into shock. After two weeks of being a paranoid mom i stopped giving the nutra-cal.

Hope this helped.
Again welcome!!!! :D

Hello and Welcome and Congrats on your new chi. Kiwi eats Solid Gold and Peaches is on Euknuba because that is what the breeder had her on. I plan to gradually switch her to the solid gold too. I try to find small toys I also will be baby toys sometimes but make sure the don't have buttons or beads because it could be harmful. They also like the rope toys. Feel free to ask any questions everyone here are very nice and helpful.
