He is 8-1/2 years old, and very fit. No signs of his age, except some white whiskers.
It occurs to me that it might be hard on his joints to jump out of my car. I think I have seen dog steps (?) I laughed at them, but now I might want some.

I have a SUV, so it is not a low car.

I might just lift him out, but I am trying to encourage "big-dog" behavior, rather than spoiled lap dog LOL.

This is my 1st small dog (he's 11 pounds), & I tend to forget his little bones & joints are more fragile.

Thank you in advance.

My dogs rarely go in the car. My family has always had trucks (not low) So I've always carried them in and out.
Does he look like he has trouble getting in and out?
Even if you buy him steps I'm sure he won't feel spoiled because he still has to walk on his own to climb the steps. But will probably be easier on him.
Or you could just carry him. But it seems lile you don't want him to feel spoiled.
I'm sure you'll choose whatever is best for him.

Being lifted in and out of a car is NOT being spoiled!!! You would find that getting out the 'stairs' every time that you wanted him in or out, gets tiresome!! Just teach him to 'wait' until you can pick him up.

Thank you everyone. .. Yes, I think I will lift him, especially onto asphalt or concrete (which is almost always). It feels safer to the joints & even bones.
