Last week, we had new leather sofa's delivered. They are quite a bit higher that the old ones we had, and Poppy has a much tougher time jumping up onto them.We have seen her do it afew times, but it worries me as she leaps off them as well and I think they are too high.

Anyway, two days ago, we noticed she was limping. She walks ok, but when she runs, she misses the odd step and runs on 3 legs. When she stands, she will hold her foot a little off the floor and seems to try to rest that leg...it doesnt hurt her or seem to bother her at all.
I took her to the vet this morning and he examined her thoroughly. He bent her leg and foot and manipulated her hips and the whole leg.
He said that he could find nothing wrong with her bones, nothing seems amiss. He just said he thinks she has sprained the soft tissue or bruised herself, and that she will be ok in 2-3 weeks. He said not to over exercise her and that it will clear up on its own.
I am convinced she did it jumping off the new sofa....and I feel terrible about it.
What do you guys think of this explanation? Has anyone's Chi ever had a sprain before?

Oh yes Kemo did but the poor baby hid it so well from me that it took other symptoms to get him to the vet. I never even thought sprain, I was totally amiss as to what to think. :?

Kemo had a fever and would not walk, was listless etc etc. Sounds like a sprain to me too. Poor thing, now you have to get her a RAMP :D like I did..

feel better poppy, keep us posted Camilla

it happened to my shih tzu mix tipper. she would jump off your lap and kick off to get a nice leap going but it eventually caught up to her and she got a sprain from doing it. she stil tries and it's ahrd to keep super girl from taking a flying leap. she don't do it off the furniture just when someone is holding her. weirdo... i'd get a ramp made or steps even so she don't keep reinjuring her leg.

Rosie is the only one who cant get up on our leather suite so i had an antique style very small table, i cut 3/4 of the legs off and padded the top and covered it in leopard print, she bounds off it now as she jumps :D

It's frightening sometimes how fragile our little chis are. My bed and sofas are not that high, but Jasmine has already hurt her leg once jumping off the bed. Not seriously thank goodness, but it really scared me. I had a chi several years ago that broke her leg just jumping off the sofa, and it was not at all high.

I have a small stool by my bed now for her to use, and also one by the sofa. She uses the one in the bedroom, but for some reason she won't use the one in the family room.

I hope Poppy's leg is better soon. It's unbelievable the things they can make us feel guily for that we really shouldn't. Maybe some sort of step stool would help

Thank you all for your replies....today I made her a ramp, its a little foot stool, with a padded top.She uses it to get up on the sofa, but still insists on leaping off  She is such a little dare devil, she doesnt seem to care and just launches herself into mid air! We are trying to teach her to use the stool all the time but I guess she will take some convincing... :D

Oh please get her a little stool. Gizmo doesn't even attempt to jump on our couch. He tried once and literally fell on his head and screamed bloody murder!

My poodle when he was a puppy jumped off a couch and the same thing happened...we took him to the vet, and he couldn't see nothing wrong...this was 10 years ago...anyhow he didn't listen and kept jumping and hurting that leg....now he has arthritis in that leg and takes 2 different meds. When he stands you can see he gingerly places his left back foot on the floor. If we only knew back then about those things and had a vet who cared more my boy would have healed that sprain...and we could have prevented more....

I'm thinking of getting a ramp for Gizmo...let me know what you decide on getting and how it's working!

Camilla,

This is exactly what happened to Echo. Her vet couldnt find anything wrong either and said it was a soft tissue or pulled muscle, well I noticed she was not getting any better so After taking her to a specialist we discovered she had a disk out in her lower back by her tail. Thats what caused the lameness in her hind leg. The put her on Zubrin and it help her heal. She is getting around great now but it is still healing. The Vet told me it could take up to 6 months to heal. You need to get her into a specialist to have her checked. It could be her disk :?
