I started a topic a couple threads down about my chi having a seizure. I got her liver shunt results back but wanted to start a new topic as I was afraid no one would see the update on the other thread. I'm really stressed now. Her test came back as indicative of her having a liver shunt. The vet said the next step was to have an ultrasound done to find the location and severity of the shunt. The next step is surgery to close the shunt. From what I gather, the shunt does not allow all of her blood to enter her liver to detoxify her blood. The vet also told me without surgery she may only live a couple more years. She's only two years old now. I am going to get the surgery one way or another, I just can't get it right this second. I just paid 1500 for her stay at the hospital and the surgery plus ultrasound and extra fees are going to come to around 4,000. So two questions: Has anyone had a chi with a liver shunt? I've never even heard of this before this week. And I've looked up pet insurance to help pay but am unable to find one that covers pre-existing conditions. Does this type of insurance exist? I'm so stressed. On a side note, however, she's back home and acting like her normal self but seems to be sleeping more than usual. I'm glad she's feeling ok while I get this all figured out. Also, I put her on a low protein diet as others recommended. Thanks to all of you that responded to the previous thread and any that respond to this one. Your well wishes are appreciated.
