Maya is almost 6 months old, a little over 4 pounds, and is getting spayed on Monday. I'm a little nervous because I know the surgery can be a little more serious for chi females. She is going to a Banfield vet at this time, simply because we had an initial visit coupon and then they gave us a great package deal for all her vaccinations and spay. I will be switching her to our regular vet after she is a year old. Banfield says they see a lot of chi's and are confident in spaying a pup of her size. We take her in at 8 a.m. and bring her home later in the day. Does this sound typical? Our last female dog, 15 years ago, was kept overnight after her spay. I am thrilled to have her home, because I hate the thought of her being gone overnight, but I'm concerned whether this type of procedure should include sending the females home so soon. Also, what should I be doing for her once she is home? Can she eat as soon as I get her home? I know she has to stay inactive - is this for a week? I am also concerned about taking her out for potty breaks because she typically likes to run around. Do I take her out on a leash? She isn't as good with going potty with her leash on, but I'll do what I have to until she is healed. Can I let her be more active after a week? Any advice you have will help me out immensely, and I thank you in advance!
