So a low cost clinic is coming this Sat at our local animal shelter they are offering microchipping with lifetime registration for 20.00 which I think is cheap so I was wondering if others have had this done to their dogs. Is there a risk in having it done to Holly being so small? So trying to see if I should have it done or not.

Overall, I think microchipping is an awesome idea. It's the only permanent detailed identification they can have. We chose to get Odie microchipped when she was spayed, but i've heard that it's pretty painless. Apparently even a hamster can get a chip, so I doubt she'd be too small. We decided against the tattoo in the ear to identify she has a chip, just because her ears are so cute! Also, even if pets don't have the tattoo, they still check for the chip at the vet/shelters.

All of my babies are microchipped. It's permanent and I've heard so many stories of lost dogs being reuinited with their owners after being separated for years and the dog turning up states away. Hearing things like that makes it worth it. I would just be a wreck if any of my dogs were lost. Without a permanent chip there's nothing tracing the dog back to me as proof. Collars and ID tags are good and we have them on all our chi's; but can be taken off easily if someone wanted to steal the dog. Granted yes if someone deliberately wanted to keep my dog and never got it scanned it would do no good; but at least I'd know that eventually when the dog showed up either at a vet or shelter that it would be scanned. It would be what would give me that last bit of hope when all else fails. There are some people who are afraid to get it done because of hearing stories where some animals getting cancer from the foreign object being imbedded. But; the risk of that is so minimal in comparison to the risk of even the most diligent owners' dog getting lost at some point in it's life. You can take all the precautions in the world and accidents still happen.

ETA: Oh; the clinic we go to Chips pets for only $15 and that includes registration for life; no other fees or anything. Most of mine were done when they were spayed; except my Tequila Rose who is just 6lbs & was able to handle the needle without any sedation; without flinching... and she's a wuss LOL.

Where in Illinois are you? That's a great price.

I don't know much about the procedure, but I'll definitely be getting Oliver microchipped. Any future dogs will be as well. Too much could happen to not have it done.

All my dogs are chipped as it is compulsory here in Spain. I highly recommend it as it is very safe.
All of mine cried a bit but only briefly and soon recovered with a goodie given by the vet!
And once its in, thats it! Lifetime registration!
