The bacteria is killed when cooked but has me worried since I feed RAW. Anyone else see this in the news lately?:(

MRSA Found in Supermarket Meat - Health News Story - WJXT Jacksonville
I haven't seen this and I know dogs are meant to eat raw, but since the meat we buy in the stores isn't all natural (pumped up with steroids & antibiotics), I always cook the meat for my chi. I would love to feed it raw to her, but there's just too many risk IMO. I cook the steak rare to medium-rare and I cook chicken fully.

This would be an issue is dogs had the same stomach acids that we do. But they don't. Their stomach acid is strong and able to handle bacteria that humans can't. Should we wash our hands after handling raw meat? Of course. Should we cook it for our family before we feed it? Yes. But unless your dog is immunocompromised, there's no reason to think that their systems can't handle grocery store meats. That bacteria on meats is not anything new, it's been happening for decades.

It's too bad that antibiotics are routinely put in the food fed to feed lot cattle. That is what is causing these antibiotic resistant strains. The use of antibiotics in cattle began over 30 years ago and now we are reaping what we sowed with the advent of these antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. :(

Cooking destroys nutrients. So if you are feeding a home cooked meat diet, be sure you are adding vitamins/minerals back into the diet through supplements.

Thanks Tracy! I knew about most bacteria but wasnt sure about MRSA. I work in healthcare so I know how horrible this bacteria is. When I saw the article it just set off alarms with me. For some reason...I thought that meat was sterile...with the exception of ground meats.

I wish meat was sterile! Unfortunately it's not.

I know. I feed THK & ZP, but if I find meat on sale, I'll pick it up and add it to the THK & ZP. I cook beef rare to medium rare, but cook chicken fully.
Good. If you are just using beef and chicken as supplemental proteins to add to THK or ZP then that's fine! Those are complete diets and have all the vitamins/minerals necessary.

I just didn't want others who were thinking about a home cooked diet to think that cooked meats were a complete diet, as they aren't. Home cooked diets require supplements to be balanced.

You're right about that! Been down that road before. Thought I'd be able to cook my dog homemade meals til I did the research and realized that you need to be a scientist, nutritionist, doggy specialist and everything else to be able to get the right amount of vitamins, minerals & protein that the animals need. Never knew how complicated it could be feeding a dog. haha

yeah, that's one reason why I do raw! So much easier. Just mostly meat, a little bone, a smidge of organ. Done. :)

BTW, how are Midge's allergies?
