ok, those of you that have more than one chi i have a few questions for ya's.....

1. if your first one was older before you got your second how did that go, and do you have any tips for me to help chiwi not get stressed with a little brother. (the obvious is to give her plenty of attention and love....)

2. carriers. any carriers that look like purses but will hold a 5-6 pound chi as well as a 3 1/2 pound chi? or do you do 2 different carriers and how silly does that look? hellllp!!!!

3. feeding. i'm free feeding chiwi right now her royal canin chihuahua formula. i can't feed her any other way but free feeding, she eats like 5-6 kibble every so often. i just couldn't put her on a time schedule not with her itty bitty tummy i'd have to feed her like 5 times a day with how much she can consume at each feeding. so what do you suggest for when jumba comes home? i will be giving him royal canin mini puppy. how will he know which bowl is his? what if he only wants to eat the chi formula? how do you free feed 2?? should i have seperate water bowls too?

4. what if chiwi doesn't like having a brother??! will she eventually warm up to him if she hates him at first????

5. any helpful hints on having 2 or any info you want to give me please please do so!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Mandy! My oldest Bruiser was 6months old when I brought Teddy home, and he loved him immediately. I kept Teddy in a small "wire Kennel" and only let him out when we could supervise their playing. Teddy was very tiny, so we could not just leave them alone. They also had seperate food bowls, and toys. I do not free-feed. I always feed mine in the morning and again at 4:00. I do have a "community" water bowl for them in their room (office). It was kind of a pain at first, because Bruiser did not understand why he could not just play constantly with Teddy! But, when Teddy turned 4months old we left him out with Bruiser and they did just fine. I did have a tendency to be way to "corrective" with Bruiser, because I was afraid he would hurt Teddy, but I had to back off and let them work it out. Teddy learned to give Bruiser that look "back off" guy! I dont want to play right now!! Bruiser did want to eat Teddy's puppy food at first also, cause it was different. I did put just a couple of kibble in his food...made him feel special! :) You will do great! Your a good Chi-Mommy!! Cant really advise on the carriers...Chloe is the only one I have that loves them

so should i get an ex pen for Jumba for when i can't supervise? until they are familiar with each other?? i can't keep chiwi in cause she can climb out of them :?
I would, those things are great! You will be able to tell how they will do together fairly quickly. Since, Chiwi is so small and Jumba is so "husky" you should not have to many problems. However, females are a different  Some have "mothering" instincts" toward the puppies and some do not....just give Chiwi lots of extra attention. And always acknowledge her first! She was there first, and it is very important to make sure she understands it. I still pick Bruiser up first when I come home, because he was here first...makes him feel so special! He has never shown any jealousy towards Teddy or Chloe. He is a little doll! :)
you've helped me so much :) i appreciate your kind words, and multiple chi wisdome ;)
Your welcome sweetie pie.....glad to help! :)

Bosco was about 6-7 months old when we brought Lola home. It went surprisingly well! You are correct that you need to give Chiwi lots of love and affection!

2. carriers. any carriers that look like purses but will hold a 5-6 pound chi as well as a 3 1/2 pound chi? or do you do 2 different carriers and how silly does that look? hellllp!!!!

I have a Bali bag but I only put Lola in it ... Bosco can't even fit in it anymore!! (he's 8 pounds) We really only use this to transport them in the car...Bosco will sit on someone's lap.

3. feeding. i'm free feeding chiwi right now her royal canin chihuahua formula. i can't feed her any other way but free feeding, she eats like 5-6 kibble every so often. i just couldn't put her on a time schedule not with her itty bitty tummy i'd have to feed her like 5 times a day with how much she can consume at each feeding. so what do you suggest for when jumba comes home? i will be giving him royal canin mini puppy. how will he know which bowl is his? what if he only wants to eat the chi formula? how do you free feed 2?? should i have seperate water bowls too?

I don't free feed mine, so I can't really help you with this. But Bosco and Lola eat out of the same bowl and drink out of the same water bowl just fine. However, Lola will not eat until Bosco gets the first mouthful.

4. what if chiwi doesn't like having a brother??! will she eventually warm up to him if she hates him at first????

Even if they hate each other at first (which I doubt they will!) but even if they do, they will warm up to each other. Don't worry, things like this have a way of working out!

5. any helpful hints on having 2 or any info you want to give me please please do so!!!!!!!!!!

Be patient...things will work out...I am so happy I got Lola, especially watching the two of them play together! Good luck![/b]

my pheobe was 3 years old when i got mr. beefy as a pup. at first she would try to attack him every time i wasn't looking, so i had to put him in a playpen when i couldn't supervise (i never have used a crate since i'm home all day, and my dogs are big enough to sleep in bed with me safely) after the first week she quit trying to eat him and decided to mommy him to death instead. at the time he was much smaller than her (he was 3 1/2 lbs, she was 6lbs) so she would just lay on top of him and hold him down while she cleaned him.. they still do this, and even tho he is now 9lbs he can't excape her grip, lol. the only other problem we had was that she was old enough that she didn't want to play, and it was all he wanted to do. occasionally he would corner her and growl, just trying to get her to play, but she didn't understand and would pee herself in fear (shes a rescue dog, she pees herself over alot of things) but eventually she figured out shes a better jumper than him, and would just go lay down somewhere like the top of the sofa where he couldn't reach her.

i don't use carriers...can't help there. beefy alone is too big for one, and pheobe hates them.

3. feeding. i'm free feeding chiwi right now her royal canin chihuahua formula. i can't feed her any other way but free feeding, she eats like 5-6 kibble every so often. i just couldn't put her on a time schedule not with her itty bitty tummy i'd have to feed her like 5 times a day with how much she can consume at each feeding. so what do you suggest for when jumba comes home? i will be giving him royal canin mini puppy. how will he know which bowl is his? what if he only wants to eat the chi formula? how do you free feed 2?? should i have seperate water bowls too?

i have one big water bowl for both. now as for free feeding and knowing whos eating what... we ended up just putting out the puppy food for both until we switched beefy to the dog food that pheobe had been eating because they would eat eachothers food. if you free feed them both from the start then you shouldn't have a problem teaching the new guy that thats how its gonna be. i would give them each their own bowl tho, even if its the same thing in both, so that if they both want to eat at the same time they don't fight. mine like to take a piece from one bowl, eat it, then switch bowls, lol.

if you are giving treats to one (like while training the new pup) then be sure you find a reason to treat the other. for example, phoebe can sit on command, but thats the only trick she knows, so when i was teaching beefy to go on the puppy pads to potty, if i saw him do it i would give him a treat, but then pheobe would be jealous so i'd tell her "sit" just to have an excuse to give her one too, lol.

good luck, it might be hard at first, or they migh take to eachother right away, but i'd bet that in the long run they will be the best of friends. :)

mine eat in sep bowls, they drink from the same water bowls but I keep two out for them, one in kitchen-one in bedroom

Kemo ate puppy food until I switched Bindi, better than trying to juggle both and Kemo was and still is insanely jealous so he eats hers just hoping she would starve to death and dissapear

He tormented her for 2 weeks then slacked off, but she is full of vinegar so he just got tired I think

I had an x-pen in the beginning it helped.

Most of all let them work it out..........jump in when it gets nasty and thats it.

It will all be ok
chiwi hates the puppy food i tried to wean her into the chi food but it turned out she was not having that puppy food in the bowl at all so she picked out what she wanted in it.... this is going to be tricky...
had to bump this up to the first page :)

brother. (the obvious is to give her plenty of attention and love....)

Treat both just the same with treats, hugs, and lots of kisses

2. carriers. any carriers that look like purses but will hold a 5-6 pound chi as well as a 3 1/2 pound chi? or do you do 2 different carriers and how silly does that look? hellllp!!!!

I just got a purse carrier for my youngest i plan to use it when its not as hot.My older one prefers to be in her plastic kennel.

3. feeding. i'm free feeding chiwi right now her royal canin chihuahua formula. i can't feed her any other way but free feeding, she eats like 5-6 kibble every so often. i just couldn't put her on a time schedule not with her itty bitty tummy i'd have to feed her like 5 times a day with how much she can consume at each feeding. so what do you suggest for when jumba comes home? i will be giving him royal canin mini puppy. how will he know which bowl is his? what if he only wants to eat the chi formula? how do you free feed 2?? should i have seperate water bowls too?

I schedule feed both of my chis especially cause my younger chi would end up eating all day.I feed them in seperate rooms and bowls as well just added a water bottle to her crate for when we are out otherwise they drink from the same bowl but different food bowls.

4. what if chiwi doesn't like having a brother??! will she eventually warm up to him if she hates him at first????

Well mine are both females at first the older one was a bit jealous but takes good care of her like a mommy and defends her as well and they love to chase each other in the living room.

Hey Mandy.... I have only 1 Gadget but if I had another one I would most certainly make them a big pouch out of a pair of old jeans and carry them around and then they would start loving eachother and want to do nothing but love and cuddle each other... heheheheheh

but on the serious side of things.... I think If I had 2 I would make a pen for the pup but you know that if Chiwi does like jumba right off the bat. you will not have to worry about her climbing out you will have to worry about her climbing into be with him.....

free feeding... hmmm... I think I would see how it goes and if you have him in his pen then you won't have to worry about them eating eachothers food unless you were hoome and it would be him eating her food and what would that hurt?

Good luck and God bless

as far as the feeding goes, i guess i'm jsut so bent on having him eat puppy food but there are some cases when the puppies dont' eat dog food at all and vets tell them whatever you can get them to eat is better than nothing right now. so if he does eat her food too what harm could be from him eating royal canin chi.... it's very healthy and nutrient and vitamin packed...

anyone think me wrapping jumba up in a towel and hanging out with him in it today then when i get home letting chiwi lay in the towel is a good idea so they get each others scent?
although i do not own multiple chi;s... ihave seen dog carriers made for 2 toy dogs to fit in.. (one dogs head out each side, or both out one..

absolutely!! when my son was born last year, everything i read said to take home the babys blankets and clothes before bring home the baby, so the dogs could smell him and get used to it, so i figured it couldn't hurt. my huband brought home afew blankets my son had slept with the day before we came home, and when we brought the baby home they took one sniff of him and just walked away like he was no big deal. might not be the same with another dog, but it sure can't hurt to try. :)
