My dog has been carrying around a little stuffed chihuahua for 24hrs straight and keeps whining and will not let the other chi's go near it or let us touch it. She's not in heat is not pregnant and has been a mother before. I don't get why she's doing this it is becoming so annoying because she keeps whimpering and carrying it around, she even takes it outside to pee with her.....what is the deal?

Ya it is very odd. I've had my boyfriends chihuahua here for the week while I'm on vacation but his chihuahua is her daughter so I don't think it's an attention thing, they see each other every weekend, just don't reside in the same household right now due to a family members illness.

She was just in heat in December and didn't mate with any dogs. So she can't be going into heat already again. She will be getting fixed eventually.

I asked her a couple times where her puppies were and I used to say that when she really had puppies or if she'd be downstairs with us and I heard them crying I would say "Baby go get your puppies" so maybe I triggered something and she's missing them? I didn't think they really remembered them once they were gone though. She doesn't acknowledge her real daughter as hers she doesn't bother with her much at all. I don't know but I hope I get some sleep tonight!!

Sounds like she had a false pregnancy.
If she went into heat in December then I believe this is about the time she would have delivered her puppies. I could be wrong.

she has no symptoms of a false pregnancy though she didn't gain weight, her hair didn't fall out, she doesn't have liquid coming out of her nipples etc. It's just odd. Yesterday she didn't eat anything all day which is normal for her sometimes she skips a day of eating but late at night I grabbed a bowl of grapes for myself and got her a bowl of food to offer it to her again and I had left the bowl of grapes on my bed while I went to get her food and when I got back she got into my grapes which is VERY ODD my chi's never ever touch my plate if I leave them alone with it. I'm not sure how many she ate and I heard that grapes are toxic but she hasn't been sick or anything just been having strange behaviour.

My mother in law has terminal cancer and she has really picked up on it she definitely can sense it because she won't sleep with us she has to sleep with my mother in law while we are visiting on the weekends. I'm not sure if this might be a reason for distress too? I really don't know but she is still currently whining and I'm getting ready for bed so she had better get herself to bed also or she may be sleeping outside tonight (just kidding) LOL.

I agree that it sounds like a falsie. Poor girl. They don't need ALL the symptoms to be suffering from a disorder.

Are you planning on spaying her?

Is she having any kind of discharge at all? I would wonder about pyometra. False pregnancies are common and she doesn't have to get larger or have milk production for it to be a false pregnancy. Her hormones are out of whack and she is in distress. I would take her to the vet to make sure she isn't having anything physical going on. A closed pyometra can be very dangerous and every heat cycle they go through without having puppies increases the risk.

agree with brodysmom, that you should clear up any physical problems with the Vet.
since she is showing guarding behavior with the toy, that is a behavioral issue. if there is
no physical reason, check out Nothing In Life is Free at http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm
Please keep us posted; she sounds like such a sweet little one :)

Zoey had similar behavior when she had pyometra and
endometritis.
I don't want to scare you, just to let you know. I hope
it' nothing serious. Please keep us posted.

she has no discharge either......no odd symptoms at all besides behaviour. She doesn't normally protect her toys. The only time she has done this is when she actually had puppies she would always have that toy in the box with the others and when she goes into labour she also carries that same toy around.

YES I AM GOING TO SPAY HER in the summer once I'm finished university

hmmmm...never heard of that before I will read up on it now. I was gone the whole day today and just got back and my mom took away her toy and she got a new one to carry around since I've been home she's only come to see me twice and been in her bed which is under my bed where the heater is. She still comes with the new toy tho. I will keep everyone posted. We are going to my boyfriends house tonight for the weekend so we'll see if her behaviour changes she acts like a totally different dog when we are there.

Ok so I researched it and it doesn't sound like that at all it says they would be drinking more or dehydrated or stop eating, have discharge etc she has none of these symptoms...I will call the vet monday tho and see what they say if they think I should take her in or not. She has been quiet most of the day today haven't seen her much besides to take her outside and to eat.

That's good you will take her in, the symptoms for that get worse with each heat cycle. I'm not saying she has that but better safe than sorry.

this happens even though her heat cycle was 3 months ago?? I'm planning on spaying her this summer anyways but I'm not sure that that's what it is she is eating and drinking normal I took her for a 3 hour walk/run at 2 beaches and an offleash place yesterday and she was 100% fine didn't bring the toy then slept in the car all the way home slept for 2 hrs at home with no toy then once she was rested she grabbed the toy again and started washing it and keeping it "warm". Maybe it is a false pregnancy? I'm not sure I want to rush to the vet as all else is normal besides this carrying toy around.

Yes it's baby-love and no no news to report she is moody around my other dogs as well doesn't want anyone coming near her toy. She comes to bring it to me to show me then will lay with it wash it and keep it warm. It may be that she did have a false pregnancy I don't know, I didn't think that would happen this long after her heat cycle and it's never happened before. She used to only go into heat once per year then since my other girl has gone into heat she started going into her cycle every 6 months. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not either. She is 100% fine besides carrying the toy. Eating, Drinking, Exercising etc. How long does it last if it is a false pregnancy?
