Do chi's eventually outgrow chewing things? When I catch them in the act, they run away, so they know they're naughty. Because of their chewing (they have chewed wallpaper quite a few times, aaaargh), I cage them when they are home alone, and they even chew the pee mat in the cage. I can't hide treats as one is dominant when it comes to food and I don't want them fighting when I'm not there just in case. One is 14mths, the other is 23mths, both male.

What do you do when you catch them chewing?
I hope Chi's do outgrow it! Honey is a chewer (all my wallpaper, even just painted walls is ruined!) I keep her in the kitchen when i go out now, i have puppy-proofed it to within an inch of its life :) She's been a lot better of late, she has had more interests in her bully sticks, kongs etc, so her mouth is busy on them, not my walls!
Could they be bored at home? Have you tried them with Kongs? Are they tired out before you leave them, so all they do is sleep?

Mine grew out of it.Maggie and Molly would destroy the paper on the presents under the Christmas tree.Maisey would rip the wall paper up bad! Missy got my new pair of rainbows and chewed them, not to mention their pee pads, and our socks! she'd get mad when we'd leave to go somewhere for short periods of time.I'm so glad they quit this!

Oh goodness! I haven't experienced any of this yet with my two, but they are only 15 & 17 weeks old. I'm really hoping they don't start to do any of this destructive behavior, lol!!

Our puppy is about 14 weeks. She hasn't chewed anything yet. Once in a while she would grab my flip flop and run in the middle of a zoomie but that hasn't happened in a while. We have LOTS of different chews and bones laying around for our girls. Not to mention the million toys they scatter everywhere. I don't know if the chewing of stuff starts older than 14 weeks but so far she just finds a bone or chew and keeps switching around to them all.

I think chewing is a puppy thing, not necessarily a chi thing. My baby is 15 weeks and he chews some things he shouldn't. Here are some things that have helped me:

-From a book, I got a tip that when he is chewing something he shouldn't, I firmly say (but not yell) "leave it" and immediately hand him something that he is allowed to chew, like a rawhide or toy. Make sure your baby has plenty of things to chew, so they get in the habit of using those.

-Buy some Grannick's Bitter Apple spray - available at PetSmart. It's a nasty-tasting (but safe) spray that you can put on objects that the dog likes to chew. For some dogs, this will deter them, and it worked for mine. But I was told by a PetSmart employee that some dogs don't mind the taste, and some even like it. But it's worth a try.

-Also, I believe that many breeds of dogs do outgrow chewing somewhat as they get out of the teething stage.

T-Sha was awful when she was a pup..she would chew electrical wires, my purse (take money out and chew that or my credit cards!) shoes..anything she could find!! Lol She still does chew things here and there but usually only when we leave her alone by herself or if she wants something like a biscuit or more food and we're ignoring her then she goes to find something! I def think it's an attention thing with my spoiled girl

Thanks folks for all your replies.
I give the guilty party a stern row, tell him that is not for chewing. If I don't know which one is guilty, I usually say 'who done that'? but Hulk always looks guilty and always runs away, even when I know it's not him!
Hulk (the elder one) is more of a chewer than Romeo. I can't give them chew sticks when I'm leaving them alone. They always want the same toy/chew and fight over them and I feel when I am there I can tell them to stop fighting. I would be afraid that they maybe one day really fight and draw blood, at the moment it is just snarling at each other.
They are very close most of the time and well bonded.
