So most of you know that Miya and I will be spending the majority of the summer in Florida at my parents. They have two big dogs who are both indoor and outdoor dogs...so fleas ARE present. Miya has never had fleas (that I know of) so I'm wondering if I should put her on a preventative or just treat if/when she gets fleas? My vet rec'd a preventative, but I want your opinions as well.

Also, I will be asking the same question for heartworm meds. We're leaving in a month, and it's pretty hot there this time of year, what type of heartworm med do you rec?

I have success with Advantage Multi, it prevents heartworm, works against
roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and fleas. It is a topical treatment, you
apply it directly to the skin, between the dog's shoulder blades. I highly
recommend it if you are going to be in an environment where the risks of
infestations are high. I use it 6 months out of the year, when the risks are high
for fleas and mosquitoes, the rest of the year when it is too cold for them I use
a dewormer in pill form. I also test for heartworm once per every two years.

From the experience of a Georgian, right next door to Florida, ;) lol I would absolutely go with a preventative against fleas, ticks (which are awful in the south this year, worst I have ever seen,) and heartworm. There are several products available to choose from~ we use Advantix for ticks and fleas and Heartguard for heart worms.

i would say prevent BUT have the treatment ready just in case! , my mum once toke her old dog to somewhere in the UK (Cant remember what she said :p) and he got LOADS of fleas! and he had bites ect. so it would be better to prevent the dog getting it! good luck! :) x

Yes I would say prevention as well you don't want your dog to get fleas those are the worst to try and get rid of one flea can lay a thousand eggs they can live in your carpets and beds and they bite defiantly prevention I use Advantage multi as well during the warmer months and I live in the middle of nowhere and I've never had a problem with fleas worms or ticks.

thank you all for the advice. I will be trying advantage multi. It doesn't prevent against ticks but those are easier to deal with than fleas, and the chance of ticks is significantly less. I appreciate everyone's advice.
