Hi Everyone,
I just adopted a rescue chihuahua who was pretty severely abused by his last owner - two broken legs and almost starved to death. He is sweet, kind, loving, perfectly house broken, and just cute as heck. I signed on here to get advice, the most important being:
1) WALKING. He will walk and follow me perfectly if he isn't on a leash. The minute he goes on the leash he will move a tiny bit then stop frozen and refuse to move. I've tried calling out to him sweetly, gentle tugs, and treats. He is completely used to the harness, stays in it all day when he come to work with me, so the problem is something else and I can't figure it out.
2) EATING. The rescue was feeding him boiled chicken and mashed potatoes, etc. to fatten him up. He is a food diva! He'll eat boiled boneless chicken thighs and a small bit of puppy chow. Otherwise I've tried everything else - Stella and Chewy's, several flavors or Merricks, Natural Balance. Any advice?
3) HUMPING. haha. Part of his last owner's neglect was not getting him fixed. He can't be neutered now until he regains some weight. In the meantime, he has taken to trying to hump my arm around dinner time in the evening. I, of course, pull him off and give him a firm 'no.' Wondering if anyone has advice how to handle this situation. My female dog did this, too, when I got her. One VERY stern no stopped the behavior permanently.
I had a female chihuahua just pass away at the age of 21. She had her own set of behaviors. So I want to make sure to help him learn to walk and eat better the correct way.
