I just spent the last hour typing up a very long and detailed message and I tried to post it and it asked me to long in again and then the screen went blank...

That's been my luck over the last year and a half!!!

In a nut shell, my 8 1/2 year old female, unspade, standard chi is pulling out her hair in symmetrical strips down the flanks of her body - starting at the shoulder blades all the way to her hips!

I do not know what to do and I do not have the financial means to have her tested for skin allergies at $200.

I have tried everything from Prednisone to changing her food and the itching and hair loss continues, but this hair pulling is new!

Does anyone know what to do? Have ideas? Suggestions? I am heart broken for my baby and I cannot find any info on the web for assistance!

Thank you... Christine & BaileyMarteen

Welcome, sorry for your poor chi's skin problems. Have you had a vet do a skin scraping for demodex mites? This is different than an allergy test and cheaper, at least it was for me. As for allergies, have you tried eliminating common allergens from your chi's diet, such as grains? Apple cider vinegar works wonders for many things, you may want to check some of the posts on it on the forum. I think your best course of action would be to talk with your vet and explain that you are concerned, but don't have the money for extensive testing that does not give results. Definitely look through the information available on here, many people have hair loss problems for various reasons.

I've never heard of them pulling their hair out in strips. I really think you need to get her treated for the problem by a vet. It sounds like she's BEEN to a vet, but it sounds like the problem isn't being treated/tested for.

Just out of curiosity is she blue in color?

This sounds serious! I'm sorry you are going through this. Have you tried Benedryl to see if this eases her any? You really need to have the vet look at her, again & find out what's going on. Keep us posted.

That definitely sounds like allergies! Sounds like it is exactly what I'm going through with my chi except for pulling the hair off in strips. I am currently looking into taking my chi to a dermatologist specialist as I have had the allergy test run, which has helped to know some of the things she's allergic too.

There are now pheromone collars out that help with stress and behavior issues. Maybe it is stress related. When you switched foods did you try a food without corn in it? I have switched to Nutri source small breed puppy food for all my chis young and old and they all have beautiful coats after switching. it is al natural and without corn. I hope you find an answer soon for your poor baby!

I agree that it sounds like stress. My husband had a cat that did this due to stress, we were told to put liquid vitamin E on the places to help the hair grow back and try to keep her at a low stress level. Problem was she didnt have a reason to be stressed.

In addition to the pheromone recommendation, might I suggest some dog music? Janet Marlow works well, as does a cd called Canine Lullabies. It find it works well with my pups, in every situation from camping to having the house re-roofed. Good luck!
