This is shocking news for the pet food industry and consumers. Heavy metal contamination has been found in alarmingly high numbers in samples of dog and cat food, from the cheap stuff all the way through the ultra premium brands.

As the truth comes out, I think the brands will be exposed. For now, they have just published the scientific paper in a journal showing the levels of contamination found in pet foods. Arsenic, for one, was found in dog food at 20 times the legal limit.

An excerpt ....

"Toxic Element Exposure for Dogs"
"A 50-lb dog eating 5 cups (500 g) a day of dry food or 1 large can of wet food (375 g) with the maximum contamination would be consuming about:
124 mcg (micrograms) of Arsenic (greater than 20 times Reference Dosage limit)
65 mcg of Cadmium (greater than 2 times Reference Dosage limit)
280 mcg of Mercury (greater than 120 times Reference Dosage limit)
5 mcg of Thallium (greater than 2 times Reference Dosage limit)
430 mcg Uranium (greater than 5 times Reference Dosage limit)
1200 mcg Vanadium (greater than 6 times Reference Dosage limit)"
"The average dry dog food exceed the Reference Dosage levels for many compounds and wet dog food had fewer results exceeding the human Reference Dosage limits."

"Dry dog food had the largest number of significant toxic metals overall."
"Seven samples of pet food contained significant amounts of Uranium from 500 to 2000 ppb."

This article is worth a look .....

Heavy Metal Pet Food Testing Paper Published

Hopefully when this information comes to light, some legislation will be enacted for tighter control of the pet food industry.

I don't understand why they just don't make good/healthy dog food EVERYwhere....all dog food should be good for dogs and vary on price for the people who can't afford it! That's a scary article! It should open some eyes! I heard somewhere that we should wash our hands after touching "dry" food before we touch any of our food because there are studies showing it could harm us. Ok if it can harm us it can probably harm our dogs. It's freaky.

Well, that is true. Dry dog food has been shown to have a large amount of salmonella present, so washing your hands after scooping the food out is a very good idea. Dogs systems have a very acidic PH, so they can handle the bacteria just fine usually... but it is a different story for us.

Here's one study, there are more ....

Dry Pet Food Linked to Salmonella in Children - ABC News

From the article .....

A new study published Monday in Pediatrics suggests that some young children of pet owners may get salmonella poisoning just by touching surfaces that come into contact with dry cat and dog food.

Researchers analyzed a national database of foodborne illness cases from 2006 to 2008 and found that some salmonella outbreaks in some children originated from pets fed dry foods in the kitchen.

I know. It's so frustrating. Don't freak out on the salmonella thing though. Courtney used to EAT the dogs food out of their bowls when she was a toddler and snack on dog biscuits and she grew up just fine. ;)

YES! That's the word I was thinking of Salmonella, I couldn't remember lol. Well at least their systems can handle it better!! Still doesn't help with the other stuff! I am so glad I've got my girls to switch and Shayley is slowly (NOT fully yet) coming off of SD! So this last bag will be the last for us! :hello1: Thank God for this forum because as much as I know about dogs/ Chis I was clueless when it came to their food. I seriously had no clue because I just listen to my vet. I feel horrible all those years for Shayley eating bad stuff :( , at least Kizzie was caught early and eating better!
