Hello all! I'm brandy new here... and new to being a Chi owner! My Chihuahua fur child's name is Newman. (Yes, he is named after the obese annoying man on Seinfeld.. there's just something funny to be about having a teeny cute fuzzball of a dog named after a character that is so his complete opposite, lol!) :toothy10:
After 8 months of being without dog children (my 2 senior dogs both passed away last summer, RIP to my sweet babies) I decided I was ready for another doggy soul in my life. I got Newman April 2012 when he was 6.5 months old. He's a California boy.. and has adjusted to the Eastcoast/New England lifestyle well so far! (Though he hasn't lived through a New Englad Winter just yet.. I'll be buying him plenty of coats and sweaters that's for sure!)
Newman is a 5 lb (when he's soaking wet, on a good day..lol!) long haired Chi. He's a shy little dude, but is overall pretty calm and polite. We've been working on his manners since day one, with positive reinforcement as my main form of training.. and so far it's been paying off. With most things he's a quick learner, and with some things he's a little more stubborn.. but we're getting there! He's a finicky eater (from what I've learned a lot of Chi's are??), but he's very healthy. I've been buying him good dog food from the start, though I recently switched to another brand (Royal Canin, the Chi specific food) and he seems to be less finicky when it comes to this new food. Yay for that! :daisy:
He took bit to come out of his shell with me, and he only recently started REALLY playing with his toys. He was into chewing his little Nylabones all along, but he didn't even want much to do with his toys. Now he LOVES his toys, (specifically his cat toys:), and will play for a few hours with them sometimes all by himself. He looooves laying on the back of the couch looking out the window and snoozing there. That's where he is right now, behind me on the top of the couch snoozing in a sunbean as I sip my coffee :coffee2: & type this. :)
He isn't much of a fan of a lot of other dogs (specifically big dogs), but he does have a few small dog buddies that he tolerates (and may even like?? Lol). One of those "buddies" is my parent's 6lb Yorkie-Poo. Another is a brown chi that lives in my neighborhood that we often see out on our walks.. his name is Choco, and the last time we say him was our best meeting yet! Newman seemed far less intimidated, so I was happy about that! :toothy9: The woman I got him from did say that although he got along with her other dogs, he would do better being an only-dog. I do see why though, with his shyness and the fact that he does like his alone time. He is a fine balance of wanting to cuddle, but after about 10-15 minutes he gets up and goes to lay on the opposite end of the couch or on the floor on his dog bed and snoozes away by himself. For that he is the perfect dog for me.. I am much like that, I like a nice balance of spending time with those I love and I do ADORE my alone time too. I think if Mr. Newman was too clingy It'd drive me a bit batty after awhile. ;)
My boyfriend is more of a cat guy... (Newman is good so far with his cats, though we've only had a few small intros here and there.. we are trying to condition them all slowly but surely.. as one day we will all be living together as one big happy [LET'S HOPE ANYWAY!] family)... but he has grown to love Newman (how can you NOT, look at his adorable face??) :love7: and vice versa.. sometimes Newman prefers his lap over mine, which I love! He comes here to bring Newman out for me on some of my longer work days, although Newman will use a potty pad if he HAS too. My intentions were to have him be both potty pad and outside trained, but he really will just hold it until I get home 99.9999% of the time, even though a pad is always available to him. I am proud of him for that, it makes life easier for Mama! :D
Anyway.. I am babbling, but as you can imagine I am so happy and giddy to have my little guy in my life! :cloud9: He's my buddy, and at 10 months old he's already SUCH a good pet... I can only imagine how much more awesome he will get when he's fully matured and his flip flop chewing & TP roll unraveling days are behind him!! :laughing6:
If anyone has any really good Chi tips or information that I absolutely MUST know... or just wants to be buddies, feel free to reach out!! Thanks for listening... errrr, reading!?? ;)[/FONT]

Welcme to Chi People. I would love to see some pictures of Newman. He sounds like a love. He came from CA, was he one of the rescues shipped to the east coast? My animal shelter has been shpping 100's of chis to the north and east coast because we have soooo many here.
