I'm reading some of the older threads so I don't start a duplicate topic. And then I will post in that thread if I still need more info.

Just a general forum tip- it's better to start a new thread than resurrect an old one. People seem to get super confused when you do that (i.e. responding to the OP who hasn't been on for three years). If you have an individual question, you get your own thread lol. At least, that's my tip for keeping things organized.

Sddyer: everyone I spoke to, even the vet Dr/s recommended to stay away from the surgery. Sounds like you had awesome results. Based on your observation of Poochino's pic and your Chi's results - I am very curious if I should start looking back into the surgery option. Poochino is now 4yrs old. How old was your chi at the time of surgery? How long was the recovery period ?

I would hate to cause him the pain of surgery but if it increases his quality of life it would be worth it. He is perfectly fine on a daily basis. Just breaks my heart that I can't run with him in the park like I used to. And my other concern is if thrashing around with his toys in the house is enough to combat weight gain, (doubtful as he gets older).

He used to love long walks but now after he goes to the bathroom he just wants to go back home ! I feel so bad ! He seems content but I know he belongs running around and being energetic !

Pupluv168. Thank you for the compliment and I'm glad that you enjoy Poochino's videos. Please forgive me if I made a "newbie" mistake and that I'm still not quite sure what I did. In your example I only responded to two members who posted within this thread. They were three consecutive post. Both if which appear on the same page as your last post just a few day ago. Are you referring to more than one person in a single post ? I appreciate you pointing something out to me but I'm not quite clear what it was. Thanks again. Feel free to clarify either by post or PM

Oh no, I was just responding to your comment to Jane (Aquarius) that you were reading old threads to answer questions and would post in those threads if you had questions relating to those topics. I was just saying its better to make a completely new thread if you have a specific question than to resurrect very old threads. What happens then is you get people replying to threads from, say, 2009, where the OP (original poster) hasn't been on in two years. It confuses people and causes unnecessary clutter. It's awesome to read old threads for advice, but if you want to ask a question you should get your own recent thread to get dedicated responses (unless it is an ongoing thread, we have a few of those, especially in general chat). You absolutely didn't make any newbie mistake whatsoever. Just trying to help make sure that if and when you need advice you get it.

I'm just a little shy on starting a thread on a previously discussed topic because on other forums people freak out - thy beat up on the OP by saying they should've searched better. But you're right ! Medicine does change and people do come and go. Thanks again. And I've already seen that this forum is much kinder than most (as a man) that I have been to - LOL

Well I mean, if you have a general question the search engine is your best friend because people don't want to answer "When should I neuter my dog?" 900 times. But if you need to ask "should I neuter my dog given x special circumstances?" a new thread is likely better to prevent confusion. This isn't an official rule, just a tip based on my observations.

theres a lot of unfriendly forums out there! and i agree this has got to be one of the friendliest. theres not too many guy users that come in here but when they do ive never seen any havin issues with the members :lol: ive been a part of a couple forums and ive got to say the rudest ones was one of the reptile ones...so mean! lol even on the 1st post i ever put introducin -.-; needless to say i stopped goin there and have posted here in the "other pets" section instead before

Hi again NYC. When I got Butch from the shelter I notice that when I pinched his back legs, I could feel my fingers through the muscle. I was like, WTH?? After I had him about a month, he was running around playing and jumping up and down off the sofa and all of a sudden started screaming. Scared the holy crap out of me. I immediately took him to the vet, his knee had slipped out and would not stay in place. After xrays, they discovered that both knees where bad, in fact, the other one was worse than the newly injured one, but had just healed incorrectly, so we scheduled him for surgery. That was probably why he was at the shelter, they didn't want to pay to fix him. It's not cheap surgery, but if you can find a good vet that has done several surgeries, that would be your best bet. He has pins to keep his knees in place and afterwards, his back legs musceled right up. You might be able to find a vet that knows Chi's. Their little legs are so small, the vet needs to be experienced with Chi's.

Sddyer: Thanks for sharing. I thought it was a "no-brainer" to just let it be. But, now I'm getting torn again - I'd love to have his care-free running days restored ! But, I fear that the surgery may bring on more complications. I am told that the tiny pins on the chihuahua's tiny bones is not such an easy thing. I am VERY glad that you got the best case scenario ! I'am just worried about making things worse. When he cut one of the pads on his paw (long story) I stayed home with him for a week, slept with him on the floor, didn't let him walk on it until it was healed up ! If he got both knees worked on - I'd be worried sick until the day I could see him run and jump again, (which he does now in sort burst - and dont want to take that away from him). OK, I'm rambling - but this isn't easy for me !

Maybe just do one leg at a time. Dogs are very adaptive and resilient during recovery, adapt to casts or whatever is needed during recovery. I really think is worth it to change their quality of life if possible. do some research on the computer and you can probably find a vet who has some experience in this type of surgery. I ended going to the emergency animal care where they are totally set up for surgeries anything that might come up. I'm sure he would like to get back to his ole self. Is he on pain meds? with those small bones they can get injuries fairly easy. Just recently Butch and Buttercup had problems with one of their legs. The vet gave them Rymadal (sp?), gave that for a couple of days and the pain cleared right up. I like to keep a supply in the house just in case something crops up. Let me know what your research turns up.

He isn't on pain medication because He is ok unless I run him in the park. He can play hyper-mode in the house for short burst with no problem but sustained activity will result in pain.

Still torn on risk vs reward !
