I just wanted to know how many of you have taken your chis. Chachi will be 7 months in a few days and is in the middle of obedience classes (yes, he is the smallest student). I just wanted to tout the benefits of taking the time for obedience. A few weeks of classes can mean a lifetime of having a happy, well-behaved pet! Actually having hands-on practice in class with a trainer is fantastic...AND your dog gets socialized with lots of other dogs. Last night, Chachi made friends with a Great Dane!

On the flip side, I have a rescue chi that is 3 years old. She is so timid that I know obedience would seriously freak her out, instead of benefit her. But I have taught her the basics: sit, stay, down - myself. And these are invaluable commands for any dog to know...so take the time to do it and you will be rewarded tenfold.
As you all know...just cuz they're tiny, doesn't mean they're not smart! :)

I haven't taken Angel yet but I definitely want to. I think obedience classes are a wonderful thing for both the pup and the owner.

We took Cooper to obedience training and it helped unbelievably! He is a much better dog not only in the house, but around other dogs as well. And it helped me tons! I didn't know a thing about training dogs, but now we work on it all the time. It was well worth the money! :D

I bet Chachi and the great dane look funny beside each other!

I really want to start taking Lola but she's terrified of other dogs. She's fine with humans but even small dogs scare her! I'm not sure how successful I'll be taking her to a training class although I really want to soon as she's nearly 14 weeks. She needs socialising but how can I socialise her if I don't have any friends with dogs, I don't trust the neighbourhood dogs and she's scared to death of them anyway!! :?
I'm very worried that a class even with other puppies will put her off. I was told maybe one to one classes would be better but then that defeats the object I guess so i'm stuck!! All the classes around me offer training with mixed dogs i.e. adults and pups! I can't risk that I don't think. She's fine if she's able to check them out in her own time but that never happens... they check her out first and the moment that happens she runs away!!
Three times now she's been barked at and nearly set upon by other SMALL breeds who I was told were real friendly and they were.... except when they met her! I don't know why.... maybe they don't recognise her as another dog!!? Or maybe her fear sets them off?? :? Now I have to carry her towards another dog and let her smell them from my arms but she is so not interested at all. She just wants them to go away and this is even the most friendly ones! Any advice please....I'm completely stuck. This is an ever increasing circle. She'll be forever terrified if she doesn't get used to them but I can't risk her being snapped at and attacked! help!

Lucie & Lola
P.S. She not a scaredy girl with anything else really! She's fine with all noises and humans and children and pretty much everything else.

I started my pup Pixel in toy breed puppy classes at Petsmart when she was about 14 weeks old. The teacher is very good and the small training area better suits her size. I would not want to have a larger breed dog in the small ring they train in but for a chi it is perfect. I also like that their are people walking around the store and occasionally watching the class. More the merrier. Pixel was very timid at first but is really coming out of her shell. The only problem now is that maybe she is too feisty! They are starting a toy breed clicker training class at the end of July.

Take her to puppy kindergarden. Call your pet stores and they can direct you to one. Marcus had a blast and it helped so much getting him to socialize with other dogs.
