Hi All,

We just brought home Gumdrop - 8 weeks old. She's super sweet and adorable (aren't they all???). She's doing great, but I'm also taking her out every hour, and also getting up every 2.5 hours in the night to bring her out. I'm exhausted, but I want this to work. I've never had a Chi before and after reading the difficulty everyone is having with potty training, I'm panicking!!
I've never had trouble potty training dogs before so is it just the breed? My vet says no - a dog is a dog - they just have smaller organs so digestion is faster, and the tiny bladder can only hold so much. They basically have to go pee more often.

I don't know what to believe.

So I'm hoping someone can give it to me straight ...

Are Chis un-potty-trainable??? It seems like all I read are negative training stories. Can anyone offer a success story?? I would love to read one and learn what you did to have your efforts succeed.

Chis are absolutely not un-potty trainable. Jaxx is 100% potty trained and has been since he was probably 8 months old. We did it just like you are and took Jaxx out A LOT when he was young. At night he stayed in a crate and had to go outside in the middle of the night up until 5-6 months. We used a crate where he did not have room to go potty and move away from it in his crate. I have read horror stories about potty training chis as well but honestly Jaxx was pretty easy to train but it did take us taking him outside for potty breaks a lot early on.

At 8 weeks old chi puppies can normally only hold it for 2 hours. The good rule of thumb is 1 hour for each month of age. We took Jaxx outside before the rule of thumb though so that we could prevent accidents in the house and teach him that outside was for pottying. So if the rule of thumb said Jaxx could hold it for 3 hours we took him out at around 2 to 2.5 hours. There were still accidents early on but taking him outside a lot I think really helped.

It seemed like potty training just clicked for Jaxx at around 6 months and he even started asking to go outside around that time.

Make sure you have a good enzymatic cleaner (such as Natures Miracle) for any accidents that do happen. I bought a gallon of Natures Miracle when Jaxx was young and it lasted through out his potty training. I believe we still have some left.

We also kept Jaxx within eyeshot and even tethered to us when he was potty training so that we could always watch him. If we could not watch him then he went into his crate.

In the past year Jaxx has had 1 accident and that was because hubby put too much water into his kibble and we did not notice that he had asked to go potty.

Potty training is a pain in the rump but a lot of work now and some sleepless nights are worth it in the long run.

Just keep working at it and praising like crazy when she goes potty outside. It takes persistence and patience but it is possible.
