Both of my babies are rescues.

My husband and I had been living in Canada for the past 10 years - working on his immigration, but had several delays that were beyond our control. One of our first priorities on returning to the states was to get a dog.

For years, I'd been wanting a Chi, although I'd never had one before. I'm one of those who does a bit of research before diving into anything, and the Chi personality seemed to match me pretty well. My husband is a 'big dog' person, and was a bit hesitant, but he wants me to be happy, so he was in agreement.

When I started actually looking, I realized that for some reason, in this area, the shelters and small animal rescues are full of Chis.

I stopped in the local shelter one day, and there was Pedro, in a crate, calmly watching my every move while I looked at all the small dogs. He was the only one who didn't cower or bark when I came near his crate, but he wasn't overly friendly, either. I spent a good hour walking around looking at dogs, but always came back to his crate.

Pedro is a 3 year old half Chi, half Cairn terrier. He was deemed unadoptable because he has an extreme aggressive reaction to children - he was abused by his former owner's grandchildren. We don't have any small children or grandchildren, and I couldn't stand to see this little guy put down, so I managed to convince the shelter manager to let me have him, but it took alot of talking on my part to do so.

He had more problems than we were aware of - he'd never been around men, and we found out he also had a problem with them, but we worked through it. My husband was very patient with him (even though he was bitten numerous times) and although he doesn't warm up quickly to other males, he is best buds with my hubby! My son and son in law are working with him, too. He's fine with both of them as long as they are sitting, but I have to watch him closely when they get up and move around - he likes to nip their ankles. All females are fine! He loves my daughter and son's fiance!

He had some health issues - allergies, and his coat was coarse and broken off. We took care of those, and now he has this long luxurious hair that is so soft it's hard to believe he's the same dog. The skin allergies were resolved by adding a tablespoon of olive oil to his food every other day. Now, I'm working on getting him ready for a groomer, which is something he's never done.

He's come a very long way, and we are so proud of him. I smile everytime I look at that little face, and we go by the shelter now and then to visit - he had a special bond with the manager, and she is thrilled to be able to keep up with him. His appearance has changed so drastically that she said she would have never recognized him had she seen him without me.

Then came Gracie...Pedro was so playful, and we decided he needed a companion, since the cat is far too regal to play with a dog.

We found Gracie through a local small animal rescue, and went through an intense adoption process. She was 5 months old at the time, and had been turned over to rescue because her previous owners said they couldn't 'do anything with her'. She is a Chi, short haired, and quite the little handful, but we've gotten her housetrained and she's Pedro's best friend.

She's younger, so we're working hard to train her to behave, and this is rubbing off on Pedro.

It's a win/win situation, for all of us.

I can't imagine life without them, and I'm so glad we rescued the two of them. Pedro would have most likely been put down, and Gracie would have most likely bounced from home to home. I think we're all very fortunate to have found each other.

Very sweet story, so nice that you have worked through their issues, a lot of people would have given up after they bite.
