I don't know either.
I think I read somewhere that plastic can pick up odors?
I fed my big dogs from plastic bowls all their lives and it didn't seem to matter to them. I did get them new ones when the old ones got all scratched up though.
I feed Sandy and Koke from ceramic bowls. They are actually bowls I had left from when I had my rabbit.

I have seen some really cute ones. The one I like has little paw prints going around the outside.
Of coarse there are always really pretty ones that were not actually made to be pet dishes too!
