I remember there was a thread on this a few months ago, with some possible solutions. Seems my new puppy is a poop eater!

On one hand, at least she'll clean up after her accidents.

On the other, as I put her down, and she poops and immediately and excitedly, like it's a great treat, turns around and tries to devour her stinky mess, I shudder in horror.

What can be done to discourage this?

Did you try the search engine to see what was posted in the past? I dont remember other than giving them something to deter it! There is also an new product POOP FREEZE that freezes the poopie instantly! Then she can have a frozen poop pop! (sorry could not resist)

I think there are 2 products that you add to the food and it's suppose to help with that.
I think 1 is called Detur or something like that, but I don't remember the name of the other 1.

Tia eats poop too, but she doesnt eat her own poop she eats Sasha and Sierra's. I have tried and tried to break her from this, nothing has worked for me. The one product I used was from the vets its called Forbid. Its a powder you just sprinkle on their food and its suppose to have an awful taste once they poop again which is suppose to get them to this eating it. It worked the first time I used for about a week, but once she realized it was just poop again she was right back at it lol.

Oh I should say that when Sasha was a pup she would eat her own poop but grew out of it. Tis is 11 months and still eating their poop ewwww

Almond Roca anyone?

I had my chi pretty much convinced not to do it when we got a kitten. Problem: My Sporkasaurus (1 1/2 yr old chi) eats the kitty poop from the litter box. My son says he thinks it's Almond Roca which annoyed me since I used to LOVE Almond Roca but now ...... well. Brat son!

Other than training the cat to go outside .... which would mean Spork would have access to it just as well, or she'd be left to run loose which, for me, is not an option ...... what I'm going to try to do is put something bitter on it everytime she uses the litter box. Got this from puppychow.com. Wish me luck that A) Spork doesn't like it even better with seasonings, and B) it doesn't convince the cat she no longer wants to be box trained.

i heard that sometimes puppies experiment with it for a while and then grow out of it. zoey tried to eat her poo a few times but never really ate big pieces or anything. she hasn't done that in at least a month.

if your pup doesn't grow out of it, other than the stuff you sprinkle on the food, i really don't know any other way to stop her from doing it!

yucky habbit, but fairly common. I am lucky none of my dogs will eat their poop but I know friends who have dogs that do. I think they sell stuff you can spray on the poop to make it less appitizing (not that poop is all that appitizing to begin with  )

Well, I have this hope that she might grow out of it if I just don't give her opportunity. I guess if she doesn't I can try the food additive. And if that doesn't work...give up...

The problem is that right now she has a very ... soft... poop. And it's like... it gets all over her nose...and then she wants to lick me. *gag*

Another problem is that she realizes I won't let her have it (I think) and she acts very furtive when she has to go. (Luckily, for now, it's fairly obvious). She puts her tail down and kinda dashes from place to place, poops, and goes for it. I'm just hoping she doesn't start trying to hide from me, going in corners, and supplementing her diet.

I just got back from taking our puppy to the vet. She too has developed a taste for poop. *gags*

Anyway, my vet said that she's eating her poop because we are feeding her too much at one time, and her little body can't digest that much food at one time, and she poops it out only paritally digested. So, what she poops out isn't tasting a whole lot different than what she's eating from her bowl. He said to feed her less food, more frequently. Example: Instead of 2 heaping tablespoons of food twice a day, break it down to 1 tablespoon four times a day.

Makes sense, so we're going to give it a shot.
She got shots tonight and she's sore. Poor baby.

EEPS! That means my Sp, is a nut because he eats ANY poop he finds, even if it's some other animals and it's half molded.

I'm just training him not to at this point the same way I train him not to gnaw on the table leg. Sigh.

Coprophagia is the proper term for a animal who eats feces. Autocoprophagia is when a dog consumes his/her own feces. Jose had a problem eating his poop, just get some meat tenderizer, has to be the kind with MSG (Monosodium Glutonate) or it won't work. The flavored kind is even better, just as long as it has MSG in it. Sprinkle it on the dog's food, (if he is eating another dogs poop, sprinkle it on their food) and mix it in. This sounds horrible that you have to TRY and make POOP taste bad, it should anyways, but it works. Don't waste your money on the Deter from Petsmart or Petco, it doesn't work. Get the meat tenderizer, or just plain MSG, they sell it at Krogers and everywhere else in the spice aisle. Just remember it MUST HAVE MSG to work. The other part of it is, make sure if you catch your dog in the act, scold him by sharply shouting NO! and clapping your hands. Just make sure you aren't scolding the dog too much if they make an accident in the house, sometimes that is why they eat the poop in the first place, to try and destroy the evidence before you find it! Hope it works!

As for the chewing on the table leg use the train aid from walmart its a spray in a can. it great and they wont go near it at all. it smells awful but works.
