Post-op collar?

1144 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  susan davis
I think I saw where someone made a soft collar for their puppy. Paco has one of those huge e-collars to keep him from chewing at his stitches but I wish I could do something for him. It is so big he bumps into stuff and I don't know how to feed him raw bones with that thing on. Any suggestions?

I would say just keep it on while he recovers, and simply wipe it with a rag to
keep it clean. You could order now but by the time it comes Paco won't be
needing a collar anymore. If you do want to take a look at a local pet store,
you can ask them about the inflatable Kong collar. I use this with our rescues.

The cone is really not that bad, it's only for a few more days. You'll see Paco will
adjust to it. It's for his own good. I have seen open stitches, they are no fun.

Hang in there, little Paco will be better in no time! Sending lots of healing wishes his way. :)

Thanks LS... do you feed raw? I usually give him a thigh bone every other day or so to get his bone in but I don't know how he can eat it with that on. Maybe he is more creative than I am...LOL.
Put him in a baby onesie. Have it snap up the back so that it covers his incision. Then he can't lick at it. Much more comfortable than those awful cones. Then he can eat his chicken. :)
I have seen that. He really hates clothes but maybe after dealing with all that he has in the past couple of days he will decide it isn't that bad. When I put a sweater on him he rolled over and over and bit at it!! I mean he really hated it. I don't want him to hurt himself.

I think I will get one tomorrow and give it a try.

I do, but I didn't have too many issues with my boys(other than a bit of a mess)
but then again they were extremely determined, haha. Try to give him his thigh,
and see how he does. You can definitely try the onesie, it might work if Paco
isn't too interested in his stitches, if he is however, he will find a way to get at
them even with the onesie. Good luck. Just try to not over-think it, if Paco can't
find a way to eat his bones, it's ok, just wait a couple of days until the cone is off. :)
Boy did you call it... I definitely overthink things...LOL

Thanks for being patient with me.
I can imagine how you are feeling Suzn. I got many dogs neutered, yet I "over-think" things
every single time, and worry too much as well. So I say "Do as I say and not as I do" haha

ps: hope Paco is feeling better!
The collar can be more bothersome than the stitches. Try him without it when you can keep an eye on things. If the stitches are getting itchy maybe see if some benadryl will help take the edge off that.
Get the kitten E-Collar from your vet! It is soft and easier on small little ones!
I used that inflatable collar for my chi's. Worked fine. Much better than the plastic cone. Good luck. Sue
