I just joined found this forum, I've been on tazchi.com for about 2 years. I've posted this question as well but have recieved very little feedback on the question. I have 4 chis, the most recent was an adopted one from a Corpus Christi, shelter. She was found running down a highway a few days before I adopted her. Anyways the poor thing had kennel cough, infested with fleas,worms, and malnourished, I was sold, but was also told she was in good health prior to the drive ( I live in San Antonio) I immediately took her to the emergency vet to be treated for everything, I had planned on introducing her immediately to my other dogs, but upon learning of kennel cough I realized I could not. So about 600 dollars later that I hadn't been prepared to spend . On top of that I was staying with my parents ( waiting on house to be built)who also had animals and realized, so I checked into a hotel room with my husband, armed with flea dip and exhausted fro the day. Due to the amount I spent when I first got her, I was unable to get her spayed immediately, which I am a huge fan of and always preach about. After three weeks of having her, her keenel cough had cleared up and she was happily amongst the rest of the herd, and then she goes into heat. Chewy my youngest male,a gift from my sister about 2 months prior ( she had bought him , but her terrier thought he was bait, so I took him) had not been fixed as well. Youi can imasgine what happened next. I came home one day to find them stuck together. I immediately seperated them from one another ( right after they were unstuck) Chewy may have been a one hit wonder but he was lucky, last week, Christ gave birth to 2 boys and one girl. I have found what I belive to be one awesome home for one of the boys. So here is where I need your help, and please excuse for the long entry, but I don't want anyone thinking I am a backyard breeder breeding for profit or just to simply" witness the miracle of life". I despise people like that. This was her first and last litter. So far here are the questions I have compiled to screen people with. Any other comments or recommendations would be wonderful, thanks.:

Have you ever owned a chi? If so what happened to them?
Any small children?
Is everyone in your household ok with having a puppy?
What is your method of potty training?
Will the chi be strictly inside/ outside, or both?
Any other animals currently in household? If so provide vet reference.
Where will ch go when you're on vacation?
Where will he sleep?
Are you prepared to have at least one of your favorite things chewed to pieces?
What type of flea and heartworm preventitive do you use or plan on using?
All adoptive parents will have to sign spay/ neuter agreement and submit papers when it is complete.

i'm not a breeder, but one thing that most good breeders make mandatory for the future owners, is if for some unforseen reason they cannot keep the pup or decide not to keep it, whether it be 1 month or 1 year from the time they get the pup, they must return it to the breeder and NOT turn it over to a rescue or shelter...that way the breeder can rehome the dog and make sure he/she goes to a good home.

The breeder I got Cooper from didn't even ask me any questions other than "when do you want to pick him up?", so I think you're doing good.

What might be helpful to the parents you DO choose would be either a small "booklet", with advice on things like how to potty train, what to expect in the first few days/weeks of having the puppy home, a list of puppy vaccinations and when they should receive them... and maybe a listing of reputable vets and trainers in their area, along with a list of necessities for the home when you adopt a Chihuahua and general suggestions.

If you don't have time to put together something like that, maybe a listing of websites to reference so the information is easily accessible to them. (I personally LOVE http://www.ddfl.org/tips and couldn't live without it.)

I've noticed a lot of the questions that are presented here on the board have to do with new puppies and most of them are questions everyone has when they bring a puppy into their home. Maybe a little information packet would save someone from having to get on this site and ask. :lol:

if you'd like i've made a contract for potential buyers if peanut and jelly ever decide to have babies so if you want i can email you it and maybe you can use it. it explains what kind of dog color name etc the person address and states everything about neutering and if the dog shall be rehomed etc.

Thank you to all those replied and for the warm welcome! I have cut various articles out from dog magazines that I tend to site from on the "puppy packet" and I also intend to make a baby book of each pup.I know it sounds crazy, bbut oh well ... I think better tobe a fanatic about animals then to not care enough. To: P&J I will take you up on that , but I've been having problems with my new email service. You know the pups did the most adorable thing the other day: When Christi ( mom of pups) was out exercising, the largets boy started nursing on his sister's ear. It was so cute!!

I just noticed you're in San Antonio!! :wave: Do you work with the SA Chi Rescue?

And I don't think the baby book is a bad thing - I have three photos of Cooper pre-adoption and I would really love to have more. Not just photos but information - like out of his siblings, what number was he in the birth of the group and stuff like that. Most people think I'm nuts anyway because I kept all his baby teeth, recorded his first poop outside, etc. Maybe I am crazy but I don't have any human kids so I think I deserve at least ONE child "replacement". (OmaKitty isn't my "child," she's my boss.)

Your list is good...here are a couple more that you should maybe ask, too:

-Why do you want this particular breed?

- Are you aware of the health problems that Chihuahuas are prone to having? (Hypoglycemia, knee problems, etc.) Despite these problems, Chihuahuas are known for living very long lives. Are you prepared to care for one for the next 10, 15, 20 years?

i think with the way chihuahuas r portrayed in the media today, its important to ask people why they are drawn to the breed, and actualy quiz them to see how much they know about the breed. Any one buying a puppy should have read up as much as possible first, otherwise their probably just buying it on whim.
Are you actualy going to email the question to them? or ask them face to face, i tihnk usualy when you meet someone in person you can tell if theyre right, and theyll probably answer half your question before you even get a chance to ask them.
