Hi All! So I know it takes a while to a dog to get use to a new diet, especially since Rio is 5 years old, and has never been fed RAW up until now. He has always had "high quality" kibble - Orijen, Fromm, Solid Gold, etc. I last had him on Fromm the Duck and Applesauce formula and he was doing well, except for huge poops. After doing A LOT of research, I decided to put in on a premade raw diet. For a little over a week, he has been getting Fromm in the morning (1/4 C) and then Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Lamb frozen formula in the evening (1.6 OZ). (He is 8 lbs).

Well, he never regurgitated at first (has been doing the evening feeding of raw for a little over a week). Now, for the past 2 days, he always regurgitates 3-4 hours after eatting--NEVER right after he eats. One night, the regurg. was slimy with a tiny bit of the food in it, and the other nights, it has just come back up and he kinda licks the air and swallows it back down before it comes out of his mouth. After he does that, it seems like he is fine. Its just that one time a night where it happens almost like clockwork. The same time for the past 3 nights. Should I be worried about this? Is this just his body adapting to a new diet? Or could it be another condition. Some history he has is that it seems he regurgitates on higher fat diets (he was also doing some regurgitation on Orijen). He also had episodes before of vomiting up bile if he had an empty stomach (I've elimated that by feeding him sporadically throughout the day). I really would like to keep on him on a raw diet, but I dont want him to feel uncomforatable or be in pain. I want whats best for my little man. I have had him to the ER in the past (about 3 months ago) because I thought he had bloat. SUPER tight tummy, hunched, trying to vomit and regurgitate but couldn't and acting very lethargic. They did xrays and an ultra sound. The vet thought it could be pancreantitis, but from the ultrasound and xray, that was ruled out. She said it was just a tummy ache with possible acid reflux. Gah, I am so confused on what could be causing his regurgitation with the higher fat diets. Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Lamb has a higher fat content than other meats. Have you tried him on a NV lesser fat protein such as beef or venison?

Some dogs with reflux or excess acid do well on a proton pump inhibitor like pepcid. Ask your vet but I know it has helped some dogs tremendously.

Or you could try a do it yourself raw for awhile. NV has other ingredients. Maybe one of the fruits/veggies is irritating his stomach? Maybe try boneless skinless chicken breast for example for a meal or two and see how he does? There is enough calcium in the Fromm to not worry about that unless his stools need that extra fiber from the bone.

I'm with brodysmom- it could be something else in the pre-made that isn't sitting well. Try just plain chicken breast for a few days and see if you still get the same problem.

Also you could compare the veggies in the fromm vs the veggies in the natures variety and see whats in the natures variety that is not in the fromm. That might give you some insight.

Thanks guys :) I will definately check the ingrediants when I get home. The NV Lamb acutally has the least fat out of all the NV premade raw (approx 19.5% dry matter basis)..which is acutally really low for a raw diet. I try not to give him Pepcid too much (Pepcid was recommended by my vet for episodes), but will if it seems like he is regurgitating a lot or burping bad. Sometimes when I do give him Pepcid, it seems like it doesn't help much, and he'll still do the licking of the air and blurping. His dosage is 1/4 of a tablet. I have given him a 1/2 before but it didn't make a difference. It seems like the "higher" fat in either kibble or raw is the problem when he does regurgitate though, not the veggies. I could be wrong. I was looking into the Primal premade raw Venison or Rabbit..as they are only 16% fat % 17% dry matter basis. Right now, I just don't feel comfortable doing my own raw regimen...I hope to get to that point within 5 months. Plus, I am going on Vacation next week, and that just isn't an option right now. I am all out of Fromm, and now just have the NV Lamb as of this morning. Tomorrow he will be getting raw in the morning and night. We'll see how it goes.
