You may have seen my other post on the chihuahua questions forum. So just look at the pictures if you have.

I was not very happy today and I feel like a very bad mom. The vet tech told me that Sammy had a "mouth from heck (substitute heck for the real thing though." and that they had to pull some permanent and baby teeth out. they were decayed and "fell out when the vet touched them." She told me whatever I was feeding her that I had to stop and only give dry food. No more nutrical (even though the breeder told me to give it to her twice a day (just a little). Then she proceeded to tell me that all of Sammy's teeth might fall out. I should come back in a month to get a dental xray or see another vet. And brush her teeth regularly every day. Even so, all her teeth could fall out.

I am really worried that I am a bad mom and now have caused her teeth to fall out.

She's in a lot of pain and I gave her 1/4 of tab of Rimadyl. She chomped down on my hand even though I knew she didn't mean to. I think i am going to give her the kong peanut butter next time (why didn't I think of that before she chomped on my hand?)

Please help me cheer up!

Here's two pictures of sammy. She's been standing, afraid to sit or lay down. finally had to pick her up and put her in the crate. I have a heating pad on to make her feel nice and warm.

Aww it's not your fault Mom ((hugs)) I think she just had bad teeth. You love her and thought you were doing what was good for her. She's so sweet by the way :)

My Poco barely has any bottom teeth they're just tiny and he can only eat on the back teeth.I feed both my 2 the same thing and Bella's teeth are perfect.

Don't beat yourself up who could possibly be a bad momma to such a sweet girl :)

Don't feel bad - you were doing what you thought was best for your baby. OmaKitty had some teeth pulled a couple years ago and I was guilt-ridden over that to the point where I was crying myself to sleep at night. But now I see how much happier she is with them gone - she purrs now, which is something I never heard her do before and she is a little bit more loving, although she's not really a lover. I'm just happy that she's not in pain any more.

My guess is that once she gets up on her feet again, you'll notice a big change in her attitude all because those teeth are gone. You did the right thing for her "back then" and you did the right thing for her now. :)

First of all I have NEVER heard of Nutrical gving a problem, sorry that sounds like an excuse.....that being said the teeth are probably genetic - if you are brushing etc and the dog is not that old then you are doing all you can do...........I think the vet is a bit wacko

My baby had bad teeth- wasnt my fault the tooth tech said it was bad breeding.....he has no adult teeth to come in after the baby teeth and he still has one baby tooth in there at nearly 2.5 as it is still firm and with nothing behind it why take it out....

anywho stop beating yourself up!! Its not your fault and your baby will feel fine in a day or two...btw the pics are good!!

UGH I AM SO MAD

So I saw Sammy panting to the point of discomfort and I called the vet. He told me that it's probably from the discomfort of having so many teeth pulled or from the spay. Just leave her in a dark room, warm, etc.

Anyway, I proceeded to ask if it was true that they pulled her permanent teeth out today and they would fall out soon because her mouth was so bad. He told me that was NOT true, they were just 8 baby teeth that he had to pull out. But the long term prognosis on her teeth was unknown because of the baby teeth being there so long. So I told him that the vet tech up front gave me a heart attack telling me that her teeth was going to fall out. I am so mad that this woman goes and says the first thing out of her mouth and exaggerates! Why is she working there?? I wish I could have recorded the conversation with her so I could play it to her boss, the vet! UGH

Give me the vet's address. I'll take OmaKitty for an annual visit and request the vet tech's help. That'll teach her.

That way, you don't have to leave your baby and Oma can have some fun, shredding a person to ribbons.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about dear wee Sammy's teeth. She's one of my absolute favourites and I feel for her and for you. You certainly are NOT a bad Mommy. Our 7 year old cat had to have some teeth removed recently even tho' he was always fed a good quality dry food that we bought from the Vet's. He used to gobble his food down without hardly stopping to chew. I'm sure she'll be fine in time. She's such a beautiful baby and your pics are really lovely. :)

I don't think you'd be out of line to send your vet a letter detailing exactly what went on. Maybe the vet tech just needs a reprimand, maybe she deserves to lose her job. It won't be your decision to make but you'll be helping her boss make the appropriate decision.

Sounds like the problem was way waaay exaggerated so I'm even more certain that you're not a bad mom. :)

Oh that poor baby! I just feel so bad for her having to go through this but usually by the next day they bounce right back. When Allie, Kaydee, Emmie and Hollie were spayed, 3 of them acted like they didn't feel good that first day but by the next day they acted as if nothing had ever happened, The other one acted as if nothing had happened at all...just another day. I don't remember any of them panting,,,,they just laid around and slept. I knew when they hurt because they would stay curled up and shivering but within 45 minutes of a baby aspirin, they would get up and want to be social, until the aspirin wore off.

Keep a close eye on her but i'll bet she feels better tomorrow! :)

Sammy update

yes Sammy is doing very well. She bounced back very quickly. She started acting like herself yesterday and today you couldn't even tell she had surgery. She's eating normal and eliminating normal (although less poop-prob from the rimadyl).

She's back to her happy, loving self! Thanks everyone for your concern!!!
