Hello All!

My name is Lauren! I currently live in Hollywood, CA and have a almost 4yr old 5lb chi named Lola Beans. I stumbled across this sight last night as I searched for answers for my pups current condition. Maybe one of you can help..

At the beginning of April I moved from the concrete jungle of downtown LA to a residential area Apartment in Hollywood. Towards the end of April Lola broke out in hives one night (first time ever) and after some liquid benadryl she was back to life but was still acting funny and had a tiny temp so the next day I took her in. The vet informed be that it was an allergic reaction, something she must of ate or maybe she was bitten. He gave her a shot of steroids and prescribed Temaril-P to be started 3 days later.

All was good :)

Now around the end of May Lola broke out in a terrible rash (see attached photos) it was small at first then broke out like crazy. The weird thing is it didn't seem to bother her (no scratching, change in diet or mood) but a few days later she started a bloody mucus diarrhea and I immediately took her back to the vet. The vet again said it was allergies and again gave her a shot of steroids and prescribed Temaril-P to be started 3 days later. The poo cleared up but the rash got worse..bigger and spread all over the body.

I took her back (this time using the other doc at the clinic) and from there she gave her two shots (not sure their name right now) blood work, poo/urine test. She told me if i'd changed anything in the last few weeks to undo it and clean. So I scrubbed the entire house and rewashed all of our clothes (bought a new detergent a week earlier.) As we waited for the test results i was told to give her benadryl every 8 hours. The rash got way better the next few days and I assumed it must have been the detergent. Plus the vet called later that week with my test results and all was fine..

It's two weeks later and the rash is still there! No where near as bad as before and last night i saw the same mucus blood in her poo but this time the poo is solid.

Please if anyone can save me another vet bill I would greatly appreciate it.

What are you feeding her? Did this start when you moved into the apartment? I would probably ask the landlord if they have sprayed the apartment as I would suspect she is having a severe reaction to something in the apartment. If you have rugs, I would steam clean immediately!!

They look like chiggers, but they would itch. Chiggers live in the grass. I would find a specialist maybe a vet that specializes in allergies or dermatology.

Maybe it's food allergies? My family dog back home had problems with rashes too and my mother switched her to a special food and now she's fine.

Ouch! That looks really angry and is quite severe. I can't save you another vet bill, but I would urge you to seek out a veterinary dermatologist so you can get to the bottom of this.

Poor Lola!! ...and you! It really pains us when the little ones have a problem.
If you have had her for four years, and she's never had a problem. . .then I would have to suspect your apartment. I know it isn't something you really want to hear. But that sure is what it sounds like.
We had a beagle once, that travelled all over with us, even to Germany for a year! When we got back to the states, we rented an old house with a dirt basement. It was very, very, old! Anyway, it was temporary until our new place was ready (which was a new condo). Our dog kept getting sick and throwing up all the time. We couldn't figure out what was wrong with her because she had never been sick before. We had only been in the basement of the house once, (but not the dog), and there was this white stuff scattered about. After we moved from the house, the dog was fine! Never threw up again. So it had to be the house!! Since she started with the rash at the end of April, it sounds like it's the apartment. It could very well be something in the carpet, or the lawn. But something has irritated that poor darling! I hope she (and you) gets relief soon.

Oh, the poor little angel! You must be going out of your mind with worry!

It definitely looks like an allergic reaction to something in her environment.

I know it's costly, but I would seek out a Animal Dermatologist.

Best of luck to you both... and please keep us informed on how she's doing.

I live is So Cal as well. I found this vet office it's called City of Angels Veterinary Speciality Center, in Culver City 877-604-8366 they have a dermotolgist, I'd give them a try. Hope your girl is better soon.

There is also Dermotology for animals, in Torrance, 877-604-8366 hope this helps.

*update

Thank you all for your comments and support!

The day of my last post I had my roommate save Lola's poop so I could potentially bring it into the vet the next day.. When I returned home after work I decided to take a look. It was completely solid with a few red (centimeter thick) blood clot looking strands intertwined in it. It was weird..not like it was the first time she had the break out, so I grabbed a pair of gloves and examined one of the strands. Turns out it wasn't blood at all! It was a wrapped up flower petal! Crazy dog was eating the flower petals.

That explains the odd stool. Now I guess I'll have to wait to see if that's why here rash hasn't completely gone away..

Can any suggest how long I wait or if I should continue with the benadryl?

@woodard2009

This all started when we moved :( she isn't on any flea meds and she's been eating the same two brands of food for over two years now (Wellness Small Breed and Solid Gold Wee Bits.) I asked the landlord if they use any fertilizer or any kind of anything and he said "no all natural" probably bs but the apartment is all wood floors and I scrubbed the whole thing down after the first break out...such a mystery!

*I've attached an updated picture of what her rash looked like this morning..
