I haven't really taken my pup anywhere yet beside the vet and to my in laws.
I want her to be good around people. I'm waiting for her carrier to show up in the mail so I can get her use to being in the bag.
Overall what are your experiences taking your pet to public places that obviously don't allow DOGS but a chi in a purse you can get away with? I have seen people in Walmart. What about the grocery store or pharmacy?
Has anyone ever told you "No DOGS allowed" even though our dogs are our fur kids? I have seen children behave much worse than my pup and they are legal LOL!
I tend to follow the "NO SHIRT, NO SHOES, NO SERVICE" sign on the door at the store but I'd like to take Dulce everywhere with me so we bond :)
Let me know
Thanks
Melanie

i took my Bella EVERYWHERE with me but i stopped taking her EVERYWHERE because so many people would stop me and i just got really tired of taking 2 hours to get out of the store. I would always try and hide her but people would look at me funny and then see her. It really really got annoying after awhile... i was trying to eat outside at a restaurant and these two kids wouldnt leave us alone for like 30 minutes while we were TRYING to have a NICE LUNCH and that was finally the last straw. So i just take her to the dog store and any little errands i have to go on that doesnt require me out of the car for more than like a minute. And now that i have two its a little hard cuz they fight over my lap in the car. I usually put Roxy in my sports bra with her little head pokin outta my shirt (if im in my work out clothes which is 99% of the time) and bella gets to sit in "her spot" aka my lap.

I take Ella just about everywhere I go. I have never taken hr to the grocery store, just because I think people would be more likely to complain. Just use your best judgement.

I take Cooper everywhere with me but I have noticed that I have modified my own behavior when it comes to places I do go. Now, everywhere we go has a patio where he and I can sit. Most restaurants will allow dogs on patios but it's best if you call in advance and ask. Because of the health codes, some places won't allow them and others will.

I did take Cooper to the grocery store with me when he was a pup a few times. I just put him in my purse and off we went. Now that time has passed, I'm not so sure how I feel about dogs being "concealed" in eating establishments or anywhere there is food because not only is it unfair to the dog (in my opinion) to be inside a "box", watching everyone eat or looking at food, but the establishment themselves could get in trouble if the health department showed up and found the dog there. That was a GREAT run-on sentence, by the way.

Plus, if it's somewhere that doesn't allow dogs and you are hiding yours, they really aren't getting any socialization from the experience and are learning that when around people, it's best to be hiding. But this is only my opinion.

I have found that most times, people are very warm towards Cooper. He's too big for a carrier, so he's always out and proud!! I have seen a few women in my town with chis inside purses and they seem to get a lot of bad looks - but Austin is an animal-friendly place, filled with animal activists and "hippies" so anyone trying to look froo-froo with their little dog in a purse is frowned on, really.

Here are some sites that I use to find local hangouts that allow dogs, as well as recreational places you can take your dog, etc.

http://www.bringyourpet.com - this one has international stuff, not just US. I don't know how much though since I've never looked! :D

Thanks for all the input.
I don't think I'd take Dulce anywhere food was. People may think that is grose. I would take her to an outside ice cream place though.
Just today in the drive thru at Dunkin Donuts the girl saw Dulce and pat her head while she peeked out my drivers side window. I thought nothing of it but I bet the lady behind me hoped the girl washed her hands before she got her coffee and donut! Hopefully her manager wasn't around.
It's true you can't take the pup anywhere really without at least 3 people saying how small she is or how cute she is. It's great now. I'm a proud mama but it will get to be enough already.
My area is not that pet friendly however places I like to travel like Cape Cod and New Hampshire seem to be more excepting. As for Florida, no more Southwest Airlines for me..no pet policy. I wanted to try JetBlue anyway.
I'll just have to use good judgement.

I take Jazzy with me to a lot of places, but I don't try to take her in the grocery stores, or anyplace they sell food unless they have an outside eating area, like ice cream shop, etc.

Our Walmart store here has a strict policy of no animals except for service dogs, and I've seen more than one person escorted out of the store. Part of the reason could be it is a super Walmart with grocery store.

I live in a fairly rural area and I've found that most of the smaller, independent businesses around have no problem with a small dog. I take Jazzy to my local book store, fabric store and pharmacy with no problems at all. In fact, they are disappointed if I don't bring her.

As you said, just use your good judgement.

i take lillo everywhere but he's not allowed in the supermarket so waits outside with my boyfrend :( restaurants in london arent very doggie friendly, it very much depends on the staff. some places with non dog lover staff wont even let us sit outside :x but we dont care we'll take our business elsewhere-i do think its a little silly not letting such a small dog outside when he sits on my lap and is always soooo well behaved  he also loves the cinema (we snaek him in there though as i think he's definately not allowed in! but he's always so well behaved and sleeps the whole way through!)

I take Che Che to Home Depot, Best Buy,Fry's of course pet stores and even Sears because my Fridge broke. I live 20 min away from Seattle and the Walmart (not the super Walmart) gave me a warning. Because Subway is inside Walmart against health department regulations. That goes for Supermarkets.

I take my Pixie almost everywhere except places that sell food. I do take her to outdoor restaurants. I have found a whole list of dog friendly restaurants in my area. I also take her to the bank, post office and small stores. Nobody (knock on wood) has ever asked me to leave...they all want to come see her. Going places with her does take forever because everyone wants to see her and sometimes I'll do my errands without her because she gets overwhelmed . I like her to get used to being around people though. If I had my way dogs would be allowed everywhere people are. They basically are just furry people anyways!

With Higgins I always do my errands in 2 rounds. The first one where I can take him with me to all the pet friendly shops. Then he's usually pretty tired from all the excitement, so I come home and drop him off and then run to the grocery store or go out to eat. That way he's with me as much as possible.

Hershey usually goes every where with me including Target... frequently. Until the other day some punk a$$ security gurad told me "no dogs allowed." That pissed me and my bf off. So she will be snuck in from now on... maybe I will fake an illness that requires a chihuahua present... next time.
I kinda take it as a personal insult because she is like one of my kids!!

Plus, you don't want the restaurant to have a surprise visit from the health department and get fined because you took your dog to eat with you.
That being said, Cooper LOVES going out to eat at restaurants with patios. And neither he or I give a rat's behind what someone else thinks if we're obeying the rules of the restaurant and they don't mind dogs on the patio. If the management allows him there, then he has every right to be there.
To the people that get offended, we say :p

When we first got Lina I took her pretty much everywhere with me. I was scared to leave her home alone cause she was sooo little. But, as she got older I stopped doing that. I bought a carrier to take her in places but she doesn't like people she doesn't know being around her mommy so she wasn't a happy camper in there where she couldn't sniff people and make sure they were ok lol. I have taken her in Wal-Mart a few times. Me and my bf worked up this deal where if I take her in somewhere I'm not sure about, I just tell them that I have an anxiety disorder and I have to have her with me all the time or I'll have an attack. I don't take her a lot of places though. Cause I usually have kids with me and that's too much lol.

Yeah, I wouldn't take Lina anywhere with me that I knew she couldn't get in. Like a restaraunt or anywhere sells food. Well, except wal-mart (but we staid on the opposite side of the store with her and were only in there for like 15 minutes tops). I would love it if there were more pet friendly stores out there. But the truth is, if you let a small chi in, there's going to be some jerk that ruins it and wants to bring a huge dog in (not saying I don't like big dogs, I love em :) ) and throws a fit because a girl with a chi just walked through the door. There are people like that all over the place these days. Some cities seem to be more accepting of it though, thanks to Paris who takes Tinks and Bambi everywhere :). In Illinois though, it's not common to see a chi in the mall lol

my sister mentioned to me that Pizza Schmizza (a funky local pizza chain www.schmizza.com) allows dogs inside "if" you enter thru the side/rear door!

In general, what do you all do if eating at a restaurant that allows dogs on the patio & does not have waiter service (you order at the counter)? Do you wait on the patio with your pup while whomever you are with goes in to order? Or do you carry him/her in to order?
