should i be worried?

winston, my 8 and a half week old baby is home with me now. he was amazing last night, He cried only twice and that was for the toilet. I let him out of his crate and he walked straight tp the paper, did his business and went back to bed and slept. I was a bit taken aback as its the first time hes been away from the 7 chi's and family of the breeder. Apparently he has been sleeping on his own anyway recenly thru choice (not forced out of bed) and when I picked him up he was really playful and taking on his dad peers even though he's the smallest of them by far.
BUT.....he blows hot and cold with me. If I put him in his pen and tidy up the rest of the room he eats abt then wants me to pick him up. Then when I pick him up he lies happily on my lap, but sometimes he shakes like mad. I cover him up to see if its cold making him tremble but i think everything's giving him the willies at the moment.

I know he was playful before, so what can I do to cheer him up and help him settle. Im so worried that I'll do something wrong and he'll be scared of everything - which is a shame because he was the most confident chi in the whole house at the breeders.

He's starting to trust his toys and he runs to me if something scares him so I'm hoping over the next week as I bond with him he will trust me and then we both can work on his fears.

What were your dogs like when you brought them home. How long did it take for them to truly settle?

I love my little guy and any advice that would make his life better would be great!

Thanks, James

James, take a moment and search (top of page) there are tons of threads on this. Its easy to worry the first time around we have all been nervous Nelly's. He just went thru a big change. He is in the middle of a fear stage one of the reasons people should wait til 10-12 weeks to get their pup. Just keep him calm and just shower him with love like you are. I would wait to show him around to too many people as "whatever" he may encounter that will scare him will stick with him.
Really it sounds like all is well so far, the shaking has me thinking as it could be a few things, in respect to that make sure his food level is consistent (make sure he eats at regular intervals 4x's a day) and drinks.

Please do whatever reading you can, there may be a few stickies that might help (I havent looked) but in general there are tons of info on here. The more you read the better you will be prepared for anything you may encounter that is what I love the most about this forum

Hiya James,
There are tons of threads whih can help u out! Winston is still very nervous!

Hopefully one day I an meet him and you an my chis!!!

Love Zoe from Barnstaple!
what should i search for, I keep getting random results! :D He's settled down alot today. He's coming to me for affection and seems to be happy sleeping in the crate, on my lap, on the sofa, in his bed - anywhere I plonk him! I was worried about his eating as he didnt eat much last night or this morning but I sat with him for lunch and he scoffed most of it down so thats one less worry now.

Fairy - I'd love for you to meet him, He'll have finished his jabs in just under a month. I'll pm you my number when he's ready to see the world and we can arrange something. There cant be many people in north devon with chis?
Chis can be very very picky!!!!!

I wouldn't worry as long as he has liquid down him!!! It will be great to meet u and winston!!! I have not seen any other chis in barnstaple!! People seem to treat them like very rare things so be careful when you first take him out, people may tend to crowd round!!

Can't wait so excited!!
i was wondering where you've been!

chiwi was good, didn't cry unless she was in her play pen or crate. she didn't explore too much of her environment at first, stuck by my side all the time.

the reasons he could be shaking is he's scared, cold, his sugar is low 9but if he is eating properly that isn't the case) and being overstimulated. just keep doing what youa re doing papa :) you'r doing fine!
awww he sounds like a lovely pup you got him from just up the road from me at slough didnt you i nearly brought the light coloured boy but have already got two boys when you get chance post piccies i bet he is a little darling awwww
Thats right - in slough! I think then he may be the one you were going to buy then. there was a cream and fawn girl, black and white boy/girl (dont know) and my baby - a fawn boy. I'm going to have to buy a digi camera tommorow because everytime I look at him he's doing something cute and I just think - aww that'd be a great picture!
Congratulations!!

The girls have already said what it could be....cold, food, excited...

Gizmo shakes when he is cold, or really excited...

aren't they the cutest things ever?! Everytime I look at my baby I fall more and more in love with him....especially in the mornings when I wake up...he pops his head up...lol...so cute :D

Your doing great by the way...
he sounds adorable I cant wait too see pics , as KB mamma says hes going through a fear stage at the moment hence why it is best to leave them with mom, but you have him so you just need to do what Mom would do and thats reassure him and love him - he will soon settle
ah thats what I think it will be then. He's happy now though I think, he loves being on my lap in a blanket and sleeping. He doesnt shake anymore except if he sees something scary so I think he's taken to me :D Thanks for your posts, having never owned a chi before I was frantic with worry that it was a big mistake to take him before ten weeks, but he's making himself boss here already :D

Don't worry too much...I got Gizzie at 8 weeks and he was just fine...I think however, those teeny tiny chi's should stay those extra weeks as they are more delicate.

My guy thought he was independent at 8 weeks...LOL...

and they do love their blankies :D
James , I'm glad to hear your lad is doing a bit better now ,
it's a really difficult time when you first get your chi , my boy
just wanted to sit with me for the first 48 hours !! then he started
to become himself ;)

Good to know he is eating ok , what are you feeding him ?

Sara xx
It sounds like things are going good and he will be settling in and ruling the roost as they all do very soon
