I have a 3 year old toy chihuahua I adopted last Friday, He woke me up at 2am, and there was wet and dry dog poop all over my room (some with mucous bloody looking liquid) - and he hasn't pooped in the house up till now. I took him to the vet, he said it was because of the diet change and environmental change. I paid $100, got a bunch of exams, special food and medicine. Then I took him for a walk. I'm stressing out so much, I got my answer from the vet but I feel so overwhelmed. Any words of encouragement? I feel awful. He is my first dog.

Thank you all for the replies and encouragement!

The dry food we were getting him he refused to eat, the wet food he loved - we mixed it up so he would get a taste for both, which I think might have been a big mistake. Right now I will keep him on the food the vet gave me and I will ask him for a recommendation on what to eat next. You folks have any recommendations?

this is entirely from my experience only, dont trust the vet, they'll sell you whatever because companies give them discounts, if your chi is not interested in dry food (as was mine), mix it with wet food, if you could say what food are you feeding it would be best, so we can give better advice, but for starters, feed a natural food, such like Blue buffalo or wellness, they have gran free foods too, some dogs can get allergies from grains (as mine), right now i feed dry mixed with canned, and she doing better each day, so i dont think it was a mistake, but again we need to know what are you feeding :D

im pretty much lost in the dog food department...im gettin myself a bag of chicken soup dog food tomaro in hopes dex will eat it. im plannin on crushin some kibbles into his food so he can eat it.

whenever u change food the rule is to only put in a few kibbles a day more and more each day and less of the other food if u want it to be entirely the new food as the result

That's kind of weird that the vet gave you a different food food to put him on while he's having tummy issues. I wouldn't freak out too much, since it hasn't been going on for long. You could try giving him some straight canned pumpkin (no additives, just pure pumpkin), or pure pureed yam. Just a teaspoon at first if he'll eat it, and wait to see if it makes a difference. When our chihuahua was spayed, she had extreme diarrhea and yam got her through it. It's not meant to be a long term thing though.

If he continues to have diarrhea, make sure he's staying hydrated. If it continues for too long, or you notice him start to not drink water or start losing weight, I would bring him in to the vet again. Hopefully he'll start feeling better soon!

i thought that was of the norm that vets prescribe u different food when the pup has tummy issues, usually its for sensitive stomachs . but yes pumpkin not the pumpkin pie mix works as well as coconut oil :) but not too much! dex loves yams too!

I just thought it was odd because the vet thought the stomach issues could be from changing his diet in the first place. Our miniature schnauzer would have a hard time changing foods, even when we did it slowly.
