We have been using padded pee pads for Kara, but are quite dissatisfied with the wet feet that she gets as well as her wanting to lie on it. We have been thinking of using a cat litter box and granules, and especially now with the new puppy at home, it feels like a change is needed. Do you have any ideas/alternatives to the pee pads? I was thinking it might be good if the pad turned the pee into jelly, similar to baby nappies. Any suggestions for what we could try would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The pee pads I use here have the gel in them, I get them at Walmart, green bag but for the life of me can't remember the brand name. I think they work well.

most dogs dont like the feeling of the cat type litters.
NEVER use clay litters with dogs they tend to clump, stick to the paws, and will cause issues if ingested.
if you want to try litter use the "crystal" ones or corn cob.
most dogs wont use the "doggy litter" because its got the feeling of yesterdays news type pellets which are hard on the feet.

try looking for HUMAN incontinence pads for the beds. you can get them from most hospital/medical supplies and many pharmacies, there about the same cost as the pee pads but are made with the gel type lining (like diapers) and made to absorb larger volumes of moisture.

my chi is litterbox trained and we had the worst luck until we went to using a clumping cat litter. it would absorb the urnine and she would feel comfortable going back in as it would be soaked up into a "clump" zoey never tried to eat it nor does it stick to her feet. I started out with fresh step but ended up using just the cheapest clumping litter as it tended to clump better. my friend is still using fresh step and she has two chi's.
