I really, really need to start some kind of exercising program. I have a bunch of weight I need to lose. The problem is this, in my left foot I have plantar fasciatis plus 2 heel spurs. This causes LOTS of pain if I stand for too long or walk too much. I've been told I really need the surgery, but I've heard how difficult of a surgery it is to recover from. I know it would help so much if I could lose some weight.
Do any of you have any suggestions on some exercises I could do? Or if you've had this problem what worked better for you? I've got a treadmill & try to use it sometimes but like I said walking gets painful after a while.
I'm trying to work on a diet plan to start eating healthier. It's so hard! Living down here in the South where we would fry water if we could, it's hard to get away from those kinds of foods. I love salads & things like that, I'm not too picky but there are some things I don't like.
Anyhow....SHARE AWAY!! :D

I have a lot of thoughts on this subject. but for now i'll just say, I just recently lost 60 pounds. I still need to lose around 40 more. the way I did it was to eat low carb. I cut out all things with sugar ( no cake, candy , ice cream ,ect ). and cut way down on all carbs like bread, ( except this healthy bread I eat that is sprouted grain bread ) , I cut out pasta, potato, rice, ect .

swimming would be great for you. could you join a gym ? also bike riding.

good luck ! , I know its hard

Salads are great because you can add yummy things like manadarin oranges, apples, raisins, chicken, etc. We have a juicer and I found a ton of different healthy juice recipes on line for free. You'd be surprise how drinking one glass of juice in place of a meal will detoxify you and help you loose 5 lbs in a couple days. Your body will crave this juice once you start drinking it because there's vitamins & minerals it knows it needs. Don't buy candy, cake, & cookies. Keep the fridge stocked with fruits & veggies. I agree that swimming would be great for you & it's fun. Find a friend & play badmitten (sp) in the pool or volleyball with a beach ball. You wouldn't believe how much exercise you get and it's really fun too. As long as you keep moving, you'll be burning calories.

I am a HUGE advocate of exercise!:D And as Elaina said, cutting out the sugar and flour items helps tremendously! I've lost about twelve pounds over the last 3 months cutting it out, but it was due to digestive problems.

Some exercise things I like is something called The Firm. They have several different ones. I have 3 of their products, the original, the step, and the wave! Another thing to check into is rubber tubes. I have a set and they have handles to make gripping easy. And remember 2 or 3 short workouts per day, say 10-15 minutes each is better than nothing!

Get the Shaun T video. It feels like dancing instead of working out. I love it. I do it low key for core strengthening, as I have an unstable spine. You can go at your pace. Eat 5 small meals a day. Cut out as much gluten as possible. Grains and such are good for you, but they cause internal inflammation. Cut back on carbs, increase your protein, and drink as much water as you can. Cut your portion sizes back. Think a bar of soap. Meat, veggie, etc serving should not exceed the size of a bar of soap. Make sure not to skip meals. This will actually work backwards. As you lose you want to replace fat with muscle. Judge your progress by how you look and the fit of your clothing. Since muscle weighs more than fat, many times people don't think they are making any progress. Once you get into a healthy lifestyle, you actually feel much better. Exercise releases endorphins. Wishing you the best of luck. Oh, and have one cheat day. This will keep you more focused. :)

And this may sound crazy, but every movement burns calories. When you are driving down the road, tighten your glutes. You can do it as many times as you can until you feel the muscle fatigue. You can do it with your legs and abs too. I drive down the road dancing in place. Make sense? I'm 45, 5'2, 3 kids, and I weigh 107 lbs. That's the scale reading this morning. I don't go without foods that aren't that great for me, I just eat them in moderation. And I move, move, move. :)

Sorry to hear about your health issues! it must be a hard place to be in when you have to decide between living in pain or a hard surgery.

I'm jumping in here because I eat a totally different diet than most people have suggested.

I eat a high carb, low fat, plant based diet. This means lots of fruit, lots of veggies, no meat and no dairy (including eggs). This diet, besides being nearly impossible to be overweight on, has a myriad of health benefits, including erasing or preventing diet related diseases.

A good documentary on this style of diet is called "Forks Over Knives" if you're interested.

Diet is the most important part of your life. You can do intense exercise for two hours every single day, but if your diet is bad, you will see barely any results.

Thanks everyone!!
I'm 5'1", 31 & have 3 kids but I'm not gonna say what I weigh LOL!! But I did read where my ideal weight should be between 106-133 lbs. So if I lost about 125 lbs. I'd be good! ;)
Just the past couple of years I've really gained a lot of weight because of 2 different medications that I had to start taking. Both of them are big time weight gainers and I don't have the choice to try a different medication. I tried to go without them & well that was a BIG mistake LOL!
I have been looking at some of the gyms in my area to have the bikes or ellipticals to use. I also am thinking of trying Weight Watchers, I know a lot of ladies have benefited from that plan.

I know that everyone says that exercising is the way to lose weight, but I think it's really about what you eat. If you're looking for something that will really work and you've tried everything, I highly recommend Food Addicts in recovery Anonymous (FA). My mom has been in the program for 2 years now and she lost 60 pounds within the first few months without exercising at all. It's a 12 step program like Alcoholics Anonymous and you will lose the weight if you work hard at sticking to the program. Here is the website:

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck in losing weight!

Honestly I don't eat a lot plus I'm bad about skipping meals, especially breakfast. I just don't eat very healthy things when I do eat. I love fruits & veggies but just don't take the time to go & shop for those good things. I'm all about quick & easy!! LOL!!

imo the best way to lose weight is to change lifestyle. Which should consist in healthy eating and exercise. It's so easy to gain weight, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will not only help you lose weight but stay that way.
You should look more into it and read lots about nutrition!

But I think eating healthy should be a decision and to not think of it as dieting (like a sort of sacrifice)
There are tons of webpages about healthy eating, lots of recipes.
And as for exercise there are so many options from something basic like running till something more fun like dancing, zumba.

Ah yes, isometric exercises!

Neither exercise nor dieting is a good way to lose weight, actually! You have to commit to a lifetime of change in your food choices. Dieting per se, is temporary. When I wanted to be a Jazzercise instructor, I was recommended to read the book Fit or Fat by Covert Bailey. It was easy for me to follow. It is about food choices. No matter which way you decide to do it, the math is simple and is always the same. . .you have to burn more calories than you consume! It may be a pain-in-the-neck, but when I was desperate to lose weight, I wrote down everything - every morsel of food I put in my mouth. I had thought I was eating much, but boy, was I!! So writing down what you eat also helps. Tips I have read about over the years say that eating your desert first keeps you from overeating, because after you have eaten your meal, you still want, or psycologically anyway, want desert! AThis could be dangerous ;)! nother was to put everything on a plate and sit down to eat it, even a cookie! I haven't done that one!

For exercise, I have never actually used exercise to lose weight! For me it is to keep my body active. "If you don't use it you lose it!" So I make sure I do some sort of exercise or yoga every day. It helps the mind, not necessarily the waistline ;)

And don't set your goal to high in the beginning. Set something you can achieve relatively easy. It gives you incentive to keep going! Look at as a new adventure; getting creative with meal planning! You can even include the kids in meal planning!

Sorry, to ramble, I just think that exercise (any physical activity) and what you eat are important! Good luck!

Yeah, well FA is just about not eating any flour or sugar. For breakfast, you have a grain (oatmeal is best), a protein (plain yogurt or eggs), and a fruit. Then for lunch you have a salad, a protein, a grain, and cooked vegetables, and the same for dinner I think..
