no thanks to my clumsiness, i hurt my dog's tail. i feel so bad. i was listening to my mp3 player and i was getting something out of the linen closet and i didn't know mina was by the door and i closed the door on her tail. i shoved it closed right on the middle part of her tail. she won't come anywhere near me now. i was wondering if anyone can give me some info about a chihuahua's tail. i wasn't able to find any info on the net. i think it's just bruised. she's hiding from me right now so, i can't tell if it's broken or not. is there anything i can do to make her more comfortable?

Try to feel the tail if she will let u
Feel for any abnormal bumps or if the tail feels 'crucked'
The tail is made of the same bones the spine is made of so as u feel down the tail u will feel each vertabra...but if you feel that one area is out of place or bigger then it should then take her to ur vet
If she will let u put some ice on it (in a baggie with a paper towl wrapped around it) Keep the ice on for about 15min if she will let u
See how she is tomorrow....hope this helped!
-Good luck and I hope your little chi feels better...it happens to all of us

A somewhat similar thing happened to Peanut.. One day I saw that his tail didnt look straight, i asked the vet and she said i shouldnt worry... The only thing that I can think of is that he bites his own tail.. Sounds Weird right?
Well i guess it was really broken because when Peanut stands sometimes, you can tell that he doesnt keep it straight and that it is broken..
I dont think you should worry too much unless your Chi wont let you touch it, but chances are, if it is broken, it will stay broken. :-/

I hope your Chi gets better..Good Luck

Poor baby, it must've scared the heck out of her. I know you must feel just awful but accidents do happen. Nobody's fault. I don't know anything about tail injuries but these other folks seem to be offering some good advice. If you're still concerned, I'd run her to the vet's for a check, just to be sure. Please keep us posted on how she's doing.

our trinket (shih tzu mix) has a bad bad tail. we have no idea what happened to her or it, i think it got messed up during birth cause it has always been kinda straight with a bunch of crooked parts at the tip. i'm not sure if they splint a broken tail, cast it? hmm. give your vet a call. see if they tell you to bring the lil one in.

I might err on the side of caution and have the vet at least palpate the tail for soft tissue damage, and examine the tail on radiographs for abnormalities along the coccygeal (tail) vertebrae for fractures, disc ruptures, etc... They can also prescribe some anti-inflammatories for pain which will provide immediate relief, and if necessary, bandage it to prevent further injury and reduce risk of bony changes.

But you know your chi better than us, so if you think your chi needs medical attention, I'm sure you'll pursue it! Good luck and get well soon! -Nate
