So max and I are visiting my grandma in Jacksonville for a few days. I needed to take him to get his nails done and so I put him in the car. Then I remembered I had to open the gate so I could get out of the yard. So I turned the car on and went to open the gate. When I got back, I realized that max locked himself in the car! He stepped on the automatic lock and it locked up. It was 90 degrees outside. Thank god the air conditioning was on in the car. I was hysterical and called AAA right away to unlock my car. They were freakig out and made us a priority. They were there in 15 minutes and got the poor pup out. He handled it like a trooper- I'm still shaking. If the ac wasn't on, we would have had to break a window to get him out.

I feel like such a bad pet parent. Lesson learned though. Always keep the keys and leave the door open.

Am I terrible? Nothing like this has ever happened and I never expected him to do that.

Ashley, you are not a bad mom. These types of things happen, what is
important is that you acted quickly and took care of your pup before it
truly got problematic. Max is fine, don't blame yourself anymore. Hugs.

You're not a bad parent, I know someone else who this same thing happened
to! So you're also not alone!

Sorry it took so long for me to respond, there's been a lot going on here. Max was okay after the incident. He drank a ton of water and then took a long nap.

I just wanted to say thank you to those that took the time to comment and comfort me during my Chi-induced freak out. I really have grown to love you guys and your supportive, kind hearted advice and nature. I know that even when you criticize, it is out of love and caring. It's so sweet.

I'm always worried I am going to somehow run over one of my Chis in their crates. let's see, that's one two three four crates in the back seat four not three four four four. I am OCD on that topic. So I understand your anxiety. it could happen to anyone.

Like you said, you would have broken the window to get him out. Not your fault! It sounds like you were more affected than he was! I saw someone who purposely left their dog in the car with the windows down just a crack the other day and it was about 20 degrees C out. The dog was panting and yelping. I put a note on their car, and as I started to call the SPCA they came out, and I had the pleasure of watching them read my note. ;)
