Pedro is my rescue who was abused by children - he was going to be euthanized because of his aggression towards them - the shelter deemed him 'unadoptable'. I had no small children and with alot of sweet talking, I took him home, two days before he was scheduled to die.
Fast forward 2 years, my daughter has a baby. Pedro still hates children, but little Cooper is growing up right in front of his eyes. I was a nervous wreck for them to be around each other for months, and to this day, I never leave them unattended.
But now, little Cooper is crawling. The dogs think he is 'one of the pack'. All 3 of the little ones surround him and go everywhere he goes, including Pedro. I have little hand prints mixed in with the dog nose art on my doors now - they literally do everything together. Pedro has started planting random kisses on him, out of the blue, and is now doing his 'play dance' in front of Cooper in an effort to get Cooper to roll around with him like the other dogs do. Problem is, Cooper isn't a dog...He just happens to be on all fours right now!
Tonight, he was crawling through the house with his furry pack and got to the recliner and pulled up - the look on Pedro's face was priceless! He cocked his head and shot me a look like he was saying "How did he do that?"
I will never let my guard down with those two, but I'm very proud of Pedro for the effort he's putting into this situation. My daughter and son are both animal lovers too, so Cooper is growing up surrounded by dogs and cats and learning to show them respect and to be gentle. Hopefully, this will make a difference. I feel like I am witnessing something amazing. Pedro has come such a long way! (He hasn't bitten my son in weeks, and he's here almost every day! It seems he didn't like large tattooed men, either...)
