Wow I do not even know where to begin to do Huly's spotlight. He is my heartstring. I do not love him more than the others so please do not take that the wrong way but Huly gets away with more as I have had to fight so hard for his life. I do not think straight when something goes wrong I think with my heart not my head with him. It is hard to explain but hopefully his story will help.

Huly was found at 3 weeks old and .5lbs along a high traffic road. The entire side of his face was pretty much infection and wounds. He was fighting for life though as he chased my OH co-worker's tire. They knew I was an ex vet tech and called me right away. After I got him I went straight to the emergency vet in our area (this was after hours). They did not even open the box and told me they were going to put him down. I said he is not a stray I am paying and they still refused without looking at him. I was blinded by anger and tears and honestly I do not remember what I said to them but I know it was not pretty. I called a Vet I use to work for in another state and we went over what I could buy at a grocery store to get this baby through the night. I was waiting at my Vet's office the next morning before they opened. A temp vet by the name of Pam Grasso saw him the next morning, ran test (all negative) cleaned him up, gave him antibiotics, kitten milk, etc and he was on the road to recovery. I called a local cat rescue and they were full but would call me when they had a spot for another kitten.

As you all know I kept Huly :D but the first 6 months of his life he battled infection. At 6 months he was finally well enough to have the nucleated eye removed. Afterwards he was actually healthy for a few years with minor issues like cutting his tail open but he was my shadow. He says “mom” and is the biggest mommy’s boy! At around age 3 he started getting sinus infections. We were in and out of the Vet clinic for every few months and he was on and off allergy meds and antibiotics. My OH and I decided to sell our house and we knew the painting, packing, and random people in our house would not be good for Huly so we sent him and Nala to stay with my parents. Huly freaked out. Yes that house has my smell but he couldn’t find me and for 2 weeks would only come out from under the bed to eat but otherwise hid under my bed there growling. I flew home to find him in their kitchen when I walked in the door. He head butted me so hard my baseball cap flew across the room. It was almost like he knew I was coming and he said mom “grandma is lying mom I have been a good boy”. He was attached to hip that entire weekend but since I flew home and he saw me he was ok with staying at “grandma’s camp”.

Finally after he returned home to me he was still getting sick. One trip to our vet a temp vet told me that Huly was Feline Herpes (also known as FVR or Feline viral rhinopneumonitis) positive. There is no cure and when I asked how this would affect his life span they told me it would not shorten it but I would wish my cat was dead. I walked out stoically (no idea how I did that) but I sat in my truck, called my mom and balled my eyes out. My mom said we need another opinion and told me to call a friend of mine to see if she has a suggestion on who I could talk to. My friend introduced me to Kim (my holistic nutritionist) as we all knew we needed to build his immune system up. We started with diet and she told me about a Vet who was holistic and traditional (perfect can fight the infection and build his immune system) in the area and got me an appointment to see her. Well Huly was a thorn in Kim’s side. He refused to give up his bad cat food and we went through every can in her store. I finally had to hide the healthy cans in his bad cat food box and we finally got him started on a new diet.

We went to the new Vet and come to find out it was Dr Pam Grasso. She had gone back to school for holistic medicine and could not believe this was that scrawny kitten she saved many years ago. It was decided that Huly would NEVER receive another vaccination as he caught this disease from a vaccine. It is now my fault my baby boy is sick. She did full work ups on him and in the years of her and Kim ‘s care Huly might get sick once a year. :D I finally feel like I am not fighting daily for his life but that I have other’s on my side (even though we did have another issue at the emergency clinic with him where they did see him but I went off on them again). I feel guilty every time he sneezes as I gave him that vaccine but Huly is my reason that I have gone holistic.

Here are some fun Huly’s stories

He is playful beyond all belief! He boxes with my OH and is nonstop into something. If he finds twisty ties or rubber bands he attempts to hide them from me but he always gets caught LOL. He has a stuffed bear that he has grown up with and um well it is his girlfriend (yes he is fixed) but he likes an audience and is very vocal (mortified ). Once Huly put his mine to something there is no way to change. If he loves you he loves you fully. There is never any middle ground with Huly. It is all or nothing. He is the epitome of a mommy’s boy! Huly thinks he is half dog half human. He sits for treats, says “mom”, “Hello”, “No”, “OOOOOHHH”, and has said “Grandma”. He can open cabinets, tries to open door knobs; if you ask him where something is he will show it to you. He knows his e-collar (party hat), dining room chairs, and under the bed will keep himself from biting his tail (either anxiety phantom tail mental not quite sure).

Huly is a drama cat. Everything is a big deal. He shows every emotion on his face. When he does not like something he scrunches his face and says “oooooooohhhhh”. When he is happy or loving you can tell. He cannot hide his emotions at all.

Huly’s favorite time of the year is Christmas. He helps put up the tree (we only use artificial as I am allergic to real), helps my mom decorate and rearranges all of her flower arrangements (he does not destroy them but rearranges them to his taste), and looks for his presents. He loves to sleep under the tree and to just look at the tree. When I pulled out his toy stocking this year he sat on it and claimed it as his. He then pouted when we had to hide it from him. He will also search his real stocking (only his stocking though I swear he can read his name) to see what is in it. He can not wait to open his gifts and will play for ours with his new stuff. It is honestly like a 5 year old child on Christmas Day!

Huly is not graceful or prissy in any way. He stomps through the house, purrs like a freight train, he snores, and he lies around in what we call his “porno pose”. On his back with one leg up on the stair railing and the other on the step. He is loud until you ask him to use his indoor voice. When he walks it sounds like a herd of buffalo but when he runs it sounds like a stampede. Also instead of rubbing you with his head, he will head butt you so hard you will swear it will leave a mark.

I really enjoyed that!!! Thank you for taking the time to share that wonderful story. I literally reached my hand out to the screen to pet that beautiful black coat, I could not resist. You are very lucky and Huly of course for having a great life together. Just beautiful!
Do not be surprised if he grows horns after all that head butting, just like a little bull.

Thanks! It is hard to describe Huly There is so much to tell as he is so funny and crazy! I ADORE him. I think also his health and me having to fight so hard has built that bond even stronger though.

I love Huly! I'm not a cat person (super bad allergies) but he is just awesome!

Aw thank you for sharing that! I genuinely really enjoyed reading all about Huly's little traits and his history :) its nice to see a cat (or 1/2 dog 1/2 cat :D) getting a bit of attention hehe!!

Cats are brilliant!! They're soo different to dogs but so alike at times too! We have a gigantic lump of a cat called Simon, hes my baby boy, as well as Winston obviously hehe! Simon talks too, but he says hello, its so funny! When we first heard it, we actually thought someone had come into the house! He only does it if the patio doors are open and he walks in and no one is in the living room, we just hear a great big HEWWOO

Simon was adopted by me really! When I first got together with the OH, Simon was his cat and lived with the oh and his parents. They had 2 female cats as well and all they did was bully the poor little guy! He seemed skinny and ratty to me and was always outside fighting! I fell for him straight away, probably because he was the outcast! No-one gave him the attenmntion he deserved because they were all too focused on the pretty girl cats! I moved in and changed it all! I took him to the vets, paid for him to be neutered and to be micro chipped. I noticed a difference straight away! His coat got smoother and silkier, he wasnt outside fighting all the time, he didnt go for you all the time and was turning into a ponchy loving cat! As I showed him more attention, he started to come to me all the time, and the OH started to realise what a big soppy sod he is and fell in love with him just as I did! Simon is so different now, to when I first met him 2 and a half years ago, you'd never think he was the same cat! He scrounges for your dinner, and sits at my feet when I'm cooking chicken hoping that I'll give him some! He goes out the back door, walks around to the front and sits at the front door meowing till we let him in (stupid thing hehe) I absolutely love his personality and I couldnt be happier with my two little boys :)

Aww, I really enjoyed reading about Huly! He is a beauty! It was so kind of you to go through everything you did to save his life! A lot of people probably wouldn't have fought as hard as you did to save him. Huly's story is truly heartwarming!

That must be why I love him so ;)

I had a beautiful cat named Gibbs when I was a teen. We rescued him and I loved him dearly. Problem was I was deathly allergic to him. Tried shots, pills, not letting him in my room, everything. It was devastating for me. He was like a dog, too. Came when called, total food hog, did tricks. I was his best buddy. But I could not get over the allergies. One day my eyes swelled shut (unknown to me, he had slept in a hamper of my clean clothes before I got home to fold them). Benadryl didn't work. I ended up in the ER on an IV. That's when my mom made me give him to our pet sitter. I knew she was obsessed with cats and adored Gibbs and would give him a great life, but it broke my heart. I cried for weeks. I still have a picture of him in the bottom of my dresser drawer because I like it close by but can't look at it without crying. He was my heart cat. Absolutely the only cat I ever truly loved. So I CAN'T love cats. I get too attached and my heart breaks.

But I guess it's safe to love Huly from a distance. He's such a fighter and has such spirit despite everything he's been through. Humans could learn from him.

Thanks for your story. Somethings were meant to be and you and Huly are meant to be! When you talk about holistic food stores, when we were in the mountains the other weekend we came across a place in Boone called Mountain Dog. The woman there was so knowledgable about healthy choices and diets for pets. I loved her store. We have been mixing Ziwipeak cat with fancy feast for our senior kitty. I knew fancy feast was not a good food but we wanted to get the ZP into her. The woman at the store recommended Fussie Cat wet food as a quality wet food. This stuff looks like real food when you open the can and doesn't smell disgusting. Our cat loves it! Long and short, I wish we had access to her store all the time. For your Huly and our senior cat diet makes all the difference.

I understand 100% I am so lucky to have Kim and DogGone Natural. I honestly credit Huly's life to her and Dr Grasso. The Paw lickin chicken looks exactly like shredded chicken.
