Hello,

I've come across a puzzling problem with my Chihuahua. She's a three year old, long haired chi. 99.9% of the time she's a loving, sweetheart who likes nothing more but to sleep on your lap. The only thing she enjoys more than being on your lap is breakfast and supper time. All in all a pretty happy dog.

But this summer she started showing aggression. We have a kennel for her in the kitchen which she uses quite frequently, especially in the summer when she feels too hot to cuddle. She would go in there while my mom would watch TV. When 10:00 rolled around and it was time for bed, we would usually get her out of the kitchen kennel and put her in the carrier she uses as a bed at night. There wasn't any problem until about June-ish. She would snap at you if you went to get her. She wouldn't actually bite but she would show her teeth and if you got your hand close she wouldn't actually bite but she would rest her teeth on your skin, as if to say "Leave me alone!". This lasted for about two months, again, it wasn't something that happened every day or even every week, just from time to time and as mysteriously as it started, it stopped.

Then a couple of weeks ago, I was going to bed early and thought I should probably take Dita with me so my mom could just go to bed without having to come in my room to put Dita in her bed. She had been snuggling with mom for a couple of hours and was sleeping pretty heavily (she had her head buried between mom's arm and torso so you know she was comfortable). Anyway, she started snapping and acting aggressive. As soon as I had her in my arms however, she was cowering and licking my face. It's the weirdest thing.

The next time it happened was two days ago. As she's a long haired chi she has a lot of hair in the back end, and sometimes when she poops it kind of gets caught in the hair. Mom was trying to help her...um...dislodge a cling-on when she started acting as described above. But then mom took her (gently but firmly) by the scruff and she stopped.

I should also note that once she's realized that whatever she's done wasn't making us happy, she would lick our face.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had ever experienced this and what they did to stop it? It's just so weird and out of character for her behave this way and it's a surprise when she does it because it usually comes out of the blue.

Please help!

My girl knows when she has made us unhappy and immediately she will start kissing and giving us the known "love attack". Very odd.

Sometimes she will growl when disturbed and if we say no, she does exactly that. Like a little human child who was bad and starts saying "Im sorry! Im sorry!" and acts all cute to get forgiven.

I think they know they are not supposed to growl but it slips their mind sometimes. I do not know why yours does this now after 3 years. My girl is 18 months its not something new. It has decreased though because she has more self control. ( it usually happens around her heat when she is more moody- she is not spayed)

I think this is the way a dog talks to us! They let us know when they are unhappy with something you are doing. This little dog is telling you she wants to sleep where she wants. (temper tantrum) Just sweetly pick her up, and she will eventually figure out she can't pull that kind of behavior. On the poop thing, well I certainly would forgive her for that----who wants someone pulling out poop from your hair? Since she really doesn't bite, I'd just go ahead and do whatever I had too, talking with her all the time.

When the weather is hot and your comfy the last thing we want is to be prodded maybe the heat got to her ? The key is be firm with your chi being a long haired has the weather been unusually hot during these times ?
If she is biting you when you reach for her you do need to stop it before it turns into somthing more serious. I hope someone on here can help you
