Hello, is anyone here a vegetarian and can offer me tips on becoming one? I do want to eat that much meat anymore. Unfortunately, I am Mexican-American and most, if not all, of the North Mexican dishes that I was raised on are a bunch of meat! I want to be healthier but I do not think that I could be a vegan. I don't consider myself a very disciplined person :-/ in fact I think I'm kind of spoiled. There is a lot of information out there on the internet but I was interested in some personal experiences with conversion and some tips to help me go through with it. I mean, I have tried before and failed miserably! Thank you to anyone who can help :)

I was a vegetarian for about 2 weeks, saddest 2 weeks of my life lol. A tip is to slowly become one, first cut off dairy products like milk and cheese (or replace with almond milk), then cut fish, then meat (slowly) all together. That helps alot.

XD lol I know what you mean. I tried to become a vegetarian and I only was able to get through for a very short time and I wasn't very happy. That's just the thing though. I'm not for lack of a better term, "fat", but I do like to eat and I would like to have a more lean body, I don't want food to make me happy or sad. I just want to eat to live, the way it should be (in my opinion). I mean on holidays sure, eating is a big part of it, but I think that being a vegetarian will make it a little easier for me to learn good eating habits and to learn get used to food being just food and not a hobby.

Thank you for the tip :) I'm going to try to make an itinerary of sorts to see when I will be cutting out certain foods. I have to have everything down in writing!

I'm a vegan and I swapped over more or less "cold turkey" (cold tofurkey?), so there was a lot of "cheating" and "backsliding" until I really settled into it. My advice would be to not make yourself nuts. If you enjoy eating meat, but would like to eat less, don't go for full vegetarianism, just aim for eating less meat.

Each time you go to buy or make a meal, as you're eying the meat options ask yourself 'is there something here without meat that sounds good, too? Can I try that instead of my usual?' And if the answer is no... that's okay! But if the answer is yes, you may discover something really tasty AND better for you.

I find the more pressure we put on ourselves to 'do it right', the more likely we are to give up and quit. Go slow, take your time, and you may find in a few months you've comfortably shifted into a vegetarian lifestyle without noticing. ;)

It's too bad that meat gets a bad wrap! Our ancestors did eat meat. That's how they thrive. Even out chis thrive on meat. You can just cut down on how much and the type of meat eat. Having a lean body isn't accomplished by cutting out meat. I have met several vegetarians (not vegans because they don't even eat dairy) and they do not have "lean" bodies!! I don't know a lot about vegetarians, but I do know people that have switched and they do not look "healthy." The internet can be a great source of information. Do a ton of research. But I do agree that if you are going to do it, it should definitely be gradual. Even when we change our chis food, we do it gradually.

Sure our ancestors ate meat. They ate meat they stalked, chased, hunted down and killed, and the majority of their diet were fruits, roots and vegetables that were much easier to find and obtain. Meat is very high in fat and protein, and if you're a hunter-gatherer burning huge amounts of energy locating food sources on a daily basis, it was a great way to bulk up on fats and proteins, which store great in a body for when food becomes scarce. Meat was obtained whenever it could be (which wasn't super often as most animals were not very obliging about being chased down and killed). Our ancestors never ate meat in the amounts we do today or with the ease we do today. Our bodies really aren't designed for it.

Our dogs do and should eat meat, but they were designed as carnivores. Take a peek at their teeth, and you see jagged little knives ready to tear flesh and crush bone. You see a jaw that only moves up and down, not side to side, because unlike herbivores and omnivores, a carnivore's digestion begins in their stomach rather than their mouth. Their digestive tract is shorter than ours and their stomach acid more acidic, both adaptations to protect them from bacterial colonies that can potentially be found in raw meat.

We humans have none of these adaptations. We were designed to be omnivores with a much greater focus on fruits, veggies, roots and nuts. Meat was only ever supposed to be an occasional option, not the constant every-meal-every-day that it has become for many people in many cultures.

You say vegetarians don't look 'healthy' to you, but I'll say that 62% of Americans being overweight does not sound very healthy to me!

Not trying to be controversial here - I have no problem with people being vegetarians. Some people do it because it's "fashionable!'"

As far as obesity - I am totally against it!! I see absolutely no reason for it!! And if you dig deep into people that are obese, you will most likely find that it is a matter of the choices they make. My mother was a "food pusher." My sisters were both over 200 pounds, my nieces also! I, on the other hand, get people telling me that I do not have to worry about getting fat. lol I keep my weight because of hard work!

If you really want to be a vegetarian, then I wish you success. And I do not say that sarcastically! We each have to do what's comfortable for ourselves.

But be careful with info on the net. There is a lot of "junk" out there as well as useful stuff!

It is not simply a matter of eating meat or not eating meat that makes one 'healthy'. Excessive calories, processed foods,
an absence of physical exercise, and many more issues soundly override the 'meat good / meat bad'
argument.

The cliche that vegetarians 'don't look healthy' is ridiculous and has been for decades. There is an abundance of protein,
unprocessed carbs, and healthy fats available to anyone who desires to live without meat.

I personally chose not to eat meat because I find it a disgusting and unnecessary part of my existence.
I choose and work towards being 'healthy' because I want to enjoy all aspects of this existence.

The two aren't necessarily related, and definitely aren't mutually exclusive !

To anyone considering vegetarianism, make it a personal choice, and stay with it or abandone it based on your personal experience.
You'll go mad trying to figure out what's best for you based on all the (endless) arguments anyone else can make for or against it.

I tried being vegetarian for a few weeks. I don't even eat meat that often- I would say it is once or twice a week. I prefer fish really over meat. Whatever you do,make sure you are eating lots of fruits/veggies and whole grains. You can be a vegetarian and not be "healthy". For example, a diet of cheese pizza, soda and chips is technically vegetarian, but it is in no way healthy. Make sure you are getting plenty of protein to help you feel full. Nuts, peanut butter, and greek yogurt are some of my favorite snacks with lots of protein.
