So the story is, we got Lola a year ago from a chihuahua breeder here in the area. She took to us very well from day one, she also was already trying to dominate or mount my foot from the beginning. For me it has been a constant battle between her and I, she was getting possessive over toys for a while and I just simply removed the toys from her and gave her something of less value. If shes chewing something I dont like she will drop it now and before she would growl and give me attitude. She knows how to sit, stay, lay down, and go to your bed, I try to make her sit or laydown before giving her food or throwing the ball or going outside. The problem is that ever since I started to take her to the Vet for her first shots she is terrified of people, we can go on walks and she is fine until someone trys to reach down at her. If I am holding her and someone gets too close she gets very defensive and sort of rolls her head upside down and opens her jaw. To top it off she has had more bad experiences with dogs than good, the other day a 2 month old puppy whos owner didnt have it on a leash ran up to her to play and she wanted to bolt, again opened her jaw as if she didnt know what to do. I have an appointment with a trainer next weekend to help me with these problems but maybe some of you have experienced similar issues.

She was socialized to an extent, we lived in an apartment complex with many irresponsible pet owners so between big dogs off the leash and the fact that they all use the same patches of grass, we waited until she was fully vaccinated to really get her out there. She did travel quite a bit since being a puppy, we have had alot of guests in the house and she was always ok with them petting her. It was like I said, ever since the VET visits things havent been the same. I guess I just need to have a friend over that will be patient and just let her ease into it. She did finally take a treat from my mom the other day though, that was good.

You know, now that I think about it, the dad was very social when we met him, the mom though was in her kennel as we were visiting with the puppies. Is this a normal practice? Maybe I got a chihuahua with a history of moodiness

She was socialized to an extent, because of our apartment complex and people not picking up after their dogs I had kept her indoors most of the time until her shots were though with. She likes other chihuahuas but doesn't care when other breeds are around. She doesnt show aggression per say towards strangers just fear when they try to handle her. She was fine with strangers handling her until we took her to the vet for her shots, after that its really hard to socialize her when she gets scared like that. I guess I just need to practice patience and taking it one little step at a time. Its just a bummer because one bad experience would put us back to square one.
