Well, José had another vet visit on Friday because his skin wasn't any better after being on antibiotics for 2 weeks. So I spent another $100 at the vet, they did another skin scrape and he is still negative for mange mites, but he still has Pyoderma. So the vet gave me another 2 weeks worth of antibiotics to start him on. Same stuff, Ancef, but this time it is TRIPLE the dose from last time! He also gave me an antihistimine stronger than benadryl to give José twice a day to make him stop itching. I also have to wash him with this special shampoo that has benadryl IN it twice to three times a week to also help keep him from itching. The vet says if we can keep him from scratching at himself and give the antibiotics, we can hopefully get this cleared up. He said sometimes it takes 6-8 weeks worth of antibiotics to clear this up! I am sure glad José is a good boy cause he is costing his mommy alot of money! Look at the pictures below, it shows just how much hair he has lost on his paws. He had scabs on his feet last week, thats why I took him back to the vet. His coat on his back looks better today, just after 3 days of the stronger dose of the antibiotics and being washed with the shampoo twice. I sure hope he gets better soon. I am also giving him an Omega 3/Omega 6 fatty acid supplement to help his skin and coat become healthier. :dontknow:

The vet has done two skin scrapings already, he did another one this last visit just to be sure there were no mange mites, Demodex or Sarcoptes. He is negative for the mange, thank goodness, so the vet is pretty sure it is just Pyoderma. The pictures look worse than it really is, he is just missing hair from the infection and from scratching and biting. I really think this time he is going to get better with the antihistimines and the shampoos. He isn't hardly scratching at all today. Before he seemed miserable, but he seems to be doing better. Only time will tell, I will have to take him back to the vet when he is finished with this round of antibiotics for the vet to take another look at him. I got some hospital grade antibacterial spray to spray on him, and I am washing his bedding with hot water and a little bleach so I pray this will go away!Kemo's mamma said:Wow that does look sore, poor baby

Has your vet mentioned allergies at all? Daisy had similar symptoms (biting at her paws and general itchiness) -- I think her paws weren't quite as bad, though. Anyway, I took her to a dermatologist and he said it was allergies. He did an allergy test and it turns out she's allergic to half of everything. They tested for 36 allergens and she was positive for 18, thus half of everything they tested for.
If this round of antibiotics doesn't work, I would take him to a specialist. If there is one thing I have learned in my experience with sickly pets (they flock to me), is that specialists are usually worth the extra money. They aren't cheap, though -- Daisy's dermatologist charges $86 for an office visit. The allergy test was $250. But she IS doing a lot better. I would SO marry that man if he wasn't married already. He's cute and he must be raking in the dough. (Just kidding -- I'm not really that shallow.)

I know Auggies Mom me too. All those antibiotics have me worried. I think they are overused. My heart goes out to him.
Jeep Girl those booties are neat, my husband and I are trying how to make some cause the ones I bought Kemo arent working, we might make them out of gloves, is that what yours are? We want ours for cold weather.

They are sweatshirt material with velcro straps that wrap around the ankle to keep them on. They also have non-skid bottoms and I sewed a ribbon with daisies to the velcro so they would be pretty. I made them using this basic pattern (but as per usual, had to alter it quite a bit to get them to fit):

I'm actually still working on perfecting them. Daisy figured out how to undo the velcro in no time flat. I tried snaps and hook & eye closures, but she figured them out too. She's too smart.
