Ever since gypsy was a baby, she has been socialised around other dogs. She went to puppy classes, goes to obedience classes and the dog beach, i always take her out with me around people and dogs, but she still is not ok around them. I took her to work with me at the groomers, and she was ok to be around the other dogs, but as soon as one came close and sniffed her, she started snarling at them, teeth baring and all, so they backed off. She is timid around people, doesnt like strangers picking her up but she has never snarled or growled at a person, only other dogs. I was thinking it might be because she is obviously smaller than most other dogs, even small ones, apart from other chis, and she is trying to make up for this by being dominant or something..?? Shes too small to play with most, so i dont expect that, but i would like to know why she behaves like this. Nothing has ever happened with another dog to make her feel unsure about them, and she does warm up to some dogs, she plays with a friends pomeranian, and gets on fabulously with my other dog (thank god for that because otherwise i dont know what i'd do) but in general, this is how she behaves. I dont know what to do, do i accept it or try and correct it, and how? Im really stuck

My dog is the same with other dogs and people. Nobody but us can pick her up. I started taking her to Chi meet-ups in my area and it really helped with the dog part (with the people part, I don't know what to do really - I already take her everywhere with me). The first two times she would have nothing to do with the other Chis and would just hide under the chairs (I didn't pick her up) but the third time, she made a really good friend and they were chasing each other around and have a ball! Is there a Chi meet-up group you can join in your area?

Twiglet is the same around people and dogs and she has been well socialised - we go obedience training every week and there are lots of big dogs she still gets a bit scared until shes seen them several times then she gets used to certain dogs - i used to think there was something not quite right cuz my neighbours Yorkie is so friendly with everyone hes just met - but he is twice the size of Twig -

The only thing i found that helps a bit is when u met new people or dogs try not to think omg is she gonna growl - try to be positive it sounds silly but im sure its given Twig more confidence if i remain calm and happy

I agree with that. My dogs are the same way they will play with my mother in laws chias outside and sometimes at in laws house. If we are all inside their house will all 8 dogs(wow yea i know) then dan and dewy are alittle possessive of their people but they dont want any other dog around us when they are. Dan he is just a grumpy old man and doesnt want them around him inside but will run and play with them in the yard. She probably just saying she is mine.
