For my smooth coats i have a combi brush, pins on one side and bristles on the other, and also a comb. Dunno if these are the right tools to use but they work fine for me :)

Marie,

You don't need much compared to a long-haired Chi.
Even the rubber ones will do.

I have a metal comb that's meant to pull out the loose undercoat.
I use it on Stella, and when I use it on the Chi's, if they are shedding bad, it
does catch hair - otherwise I get nothing.

With Joie and Lola, I will take them outside and just rub them like mad with my hands - if they are shedding it will start up a little snow storm.

i use a soft bristle baby brush for their daily brush in the morning and i rub them over with a thick, fragrance free baby wipe before bed as it gives them a wash and collects a whole heap of loose hair at the same time.
i also have a mitt thingie with rubber bristles for when they're shedding.
