last night chiwi scared the crap out of me! we were laying in bed, she had her pig ear and was munching on it, i was petting her and watching tv then she stands up and i say chiwi it's sleep time lay down but she hopped out of her bed and was looking at me so i said you gotta go potty so i put her down and she walked away from the wee wee pad and got a drink. then she went pee and started doing this weird breathing thing, almost like she had the hiccups and was gasping for air! i picked her up and opened her mouth thinking maybe some pig ear was stuck in her throat but i couldn't see anything. she did this for like 15 minutes. her gums never turned a different color they stayed pink , she never sounded like she was wretching and never looked uncomfortable (i thought oh my baby is bloating because she ate her dry food for the first time last night about 20 minutes before this started happeneing and she ate a big amount, like 1/4 cup maybe less it wasn't measured out.) but when i thought of the signs of bloat it eased my mind. her belly felt real full and round but i think just cause she was full from eating like she did. then out of nowhere it stopped. she was fine. we went bck upstairs and i tried to hold her for awhile but she hopped into her bed to go to sleep. well i stayed up for about 4 hours checking on her making sure she was breathing and stuff. i was so scared! i had no clue what was going on. i still don't. my mom said maybe it was just hiccups, i thought maybe a small piece of pig ear not big enough to block the airway got stuck but she worked it out, what about that collapsing trachea what's the signs with that? she's been sleeping a lot today and wasn't very hungry this morning, only ate a bite or 2 of food but maybe she is still full from all that she ate last night? i'm still nervous and i am probably going to call work and talk to one of the vet's there. but i was wondering what you all thought of this.

and she was making whimpering noises every so often too....
I hope chiwi is feeling better today...let us know what the vet thinks.
 Are you sure you're a vet tech?? :D Just kidding :D I hope she feels better..it might have been reverse sneezing? or hiccups..maybe they sounded differently to you cause she's still so small..Reverse sneezing is really common on chis and other small dogs..is sounds like they are trying to cough out a hairball and it lasts more than a couple of seconds...
The trachea collapsing they sound like they are gasping for air...hard to describe :? ... if you cover their nostrils it makes them breathe thru their mouth and it fixes it. It never worked on Kemo but it works on Bindi.....you can also stroke their throat until it opens up again.
Wow that must have really scared you. I dont give Tader things to chew on like rawhide on stuff like that cause Im afraid he will choke on it.

haha very funny ;) my pit used to do that reverse sneezing thing and i think that is what it was but i have never heard it come from such a little dog! my shih tzu mixes do it and it soundls like they have boogies in their nose and they are trying to suck them back in, ya know. but in a 1 pound puppy the noise sounds totally different!!!! i also think that it might have been a piece of that pig ear that was in her throat. she is fine today. eating, peeing, pooping and breathing :) it's so weird that i deal with all kinds of things at work and i don't even give it second thought but then when it's one of my own i'm a freaking nervous confused wreck with a million questions lol!
Savannah does that at least once a day. She does it every time se gets excited about something-or sometimes she does it out of nowhere. The other day she was laying on top on me really close to my face and out of nowhere she just started wheezing. The doctor told me it was reverse sneezing and she was just trying to clear the plegm out of her throat. It does look really scary when she is doing it, but the vet told me it's nothing to worry about. So when she starts up we don't really even think about it anymore. We just let her have her spell and then go about our day!

That had to be scary... My vet told em never give little dogs raw hide because they can't digest it. it will sit in the bellies and swell and get stuck in there... the reason big dogs can chew on them is because they can chew them smaller then their bellies and if it gets stuck it won't swell large enough to get stuck...

I'm not sure about pig ears.. I have not given them to Gadget.. he likes thoe C.E.T. chews I got from the vet... he wil chew on 1 everynight while we are watching tv in bed.. then he gets his blanket nad sucks on it and goes to sleep.. I think it is because he didn't get the suck time with his mom... but that is ok... I keep them clean for him and he is happy...

Hope Chiwiw is ok...

I know hwat you mean about being "a freaking nervous confused wreck with a million questions lol!" I have done that a few times....

That must have been so scary! I bet it was the pigs ear. The rawhide chews can swell in their throats. I quit gving mine any of the rawhide because of that. It also makes their breath smell funky  :) I just use the "Nylabones" they love those.
