Luxie has been eating her poo for 3 days in a row straight. The first day I caught her after she was done. Yesterday and today I saw her sneaking off and when I went to look for her she quickly ate her poo, as if she knew I was going to take it away from her. She does it in a really desperate manner!! She also is obsessed with plants and wants to eat those when I take her outside to pee. Her skin doesn't look too good either, it looks dry.
Obviously she is lacking some nutrients! I am feeding her Orijen Puppy until the Ziwipeak comes in. I also ordered Missing Link Veterinary strength which should come in on tuesday, so I hope that will give her more nutrients... Is there anything else that could be going on? Or anything else I can do for her? I'm really worried!!

I am always afraid to offer advise because I am aware of how very little I know. I agree with you that quite possibly she may be missing a nutrient, but until you get her on the food you have ordered and the Missing Link I have heard before that you could put pineapple in her food and it will stop her from eating her poo. If I'm leading you wrong, I'm sure someone will come on here and say so and explain why.

from what ive learned from the bloodwork and research ive done ...even if u feed the best dog brand in the world...it will never have all the vitamins those pups need. so gettin daily vitamin gelcaps is crucial...atleast in my case it is.

I hate to tell you, but dogs LOVE the taste of poop! It is like caviar to them. Any kind of poop, horse, pig, pigeons, racoons, they love it. The only way to stop them is to pick it up. If you show displeasure (and why wouldn't you?) they really get quick to eat it! I have a sheltie that does it. There are supplements you can buy at the pet stores to mix with their food that makes it taste bad. Pineapple didn't work for us---we just pick it up quick! Good luck Sue

Sadly, Sue is right. Some dogs eat poo and some do not. I have 1 that does all the time, 1 sometimes and 1 not at all.

We have tried pineapple juice, the coprophagy tablets and even meat tenderizer (we were suggested all and tried them all). Unfortunately, none of these have worked for us.

Here is an article (there are hundreds, likely many much better even than this one) that may give you some insight:
Coprophagy: Preventing Stool Eating in Dogs & Puppies

You will see that it is likely not a nutrient deficiency. My girls eat Ziwipeak, only raw snacks/treats, get Nupro daily, Probiotics daily and fish oil occasion so have all of their nutrient bases covered yet two still eat poo!

Some here have had dogs who have outgrown it. I still am holding out hope that my two will join that camp.

Best to you as you get it sorted!

All 3 of my girls have been poop eaters at one time or another. Two have outgrown it....one still hasnt. She knows I dont like it and will hide and do it anyway. I still know because she is a burper and I can smell it :foxes15: I did ask my vet about it. He wasnt too concerned...just told me she was probably hungry

Kristy, the girl who does my hair has 2 Poms. Her boy was a recent addition. He was a poo eater and she was mortified. She told me that she asked her vet and he said that they needed to feed him more. A couple of salon visits later I happened to remember to ask if that worked (hey, I have tried everything else). She laughed and said, "Of course not. Now I just have a fat dog that eats poo!".
That made me laugh!

I have several poodles that eat poop. My little chi "Melody" never did. My little old man I adopted back in the fall I didnt think did, but I caught him today!! I was horrified for him to be eating poop. I have him on a diet, that may be why. My male poodles eat poop also. I have some poodles that would not touch it with a ten foot pole. I have one that eats so much she makes herself sick. So far no one has 'outgrown' it. I can smell it on their breath, its YUK. I was going to try pineapple, but looks like that doesnt work either. I scoop the yard several times a day, but have huge wee wee pads all over the house. I pick it up as soon as I see it, but Im not in the house 24/7.
My vet told me one time if he could cure that, he would be a millionare.

I was horrified one day when Odie was running around my parent's yard with something in her mouth, and it was her own poop! At first she was playing with it like it was a toy, and unfortunately the game was keep-away. Finally I caught her, and she swallowed it. Yuck. That's the only time I've ever seen her do that, but since then I make sure I pick it up right away, just in case. Sometimes dogs are vile creatures, haha.

Pam-some here use the pineapple juice and it does work for them. Perhaps they will see this and chime in with details. It did not work for us, but if you have not tried it, I would. It would be a cheap experiment and it could work for you.

My two puppies (4 months and 2 months) eat theirs sometimes, especially the male of 2 months. I pick up immediately after I see it, but sometimes he seems so quick that it is out one end then back in the other....disgusting little creature! :confused2:
My three older girls never did this at all, in fact apart from taking a sniff, none of them took the least bit of interest in it.
I might try the pineapple juice on their food....do you just put it over the dry food? Mine are on Royal Canin puppy food for dogs under 10 months.
I did ask my vet about it but she said that it was nothing to get panicked over and quite common in puppies.....and that more often than not, they'll grow out of it......soooo I'll live in hope that mine indeed do grow out of it!

That puts my heart at ease! I didn't know there were so many poo-eating chis LOL!!!

Luxie is SO SNEAKY!! I'm watching her in the reflection of the window and she's trying to quietly walk to her favorite poo-eating spot and everytime I turn around and look at her she freezes and looks around like she's admiring the walls. This dog is almost HUMAN!! Hahahaha! She did that a few times and when I went to go get her she sprinted back! This chi is so funny!

Ahahahahahah! Susan Davis, my shelties loved poo, especially cat poo! My vet said it was like caviar for dogs-lol :D

As stated before me, the best thing to do is pick up as soon as they go, and if you have other animals roaming your yard make a habit of walking the property for poop pick up duty!! Ugh....gross, but all too common :(

Crazy Annie and Willy eat poo. The other 4 do not. It's actually become rather funny (what choice do I have but to laugh?) as Mom races two chis to grab the poo before either gets to it. Annie just WAITS for the sounds of one of the other chis ready to poo. And now Willy will even go get Annie to let her know when there's fresh poo. I just think it's something some dogs do, as gross as it is. Especially when Annie burps in my face.
