[Chico's Mama]

This doesn't really have to do with chi's specifically, but with all dogs in general. They are closing a high kill shelter here in vegas in late june, and all the dogs and cats will go to this shelter that just spent millions expanding and upgrading, that way dogs and cats will only be put to sleep under extreme circumstances, like a fatal illness.

This makes me happy...I hope they open up more SPCA type shelters and get rid of the ones that kill animals for no reason. I take this shelter closing very personal, because before i got chico, i adopted a black lab/chow mix puppy from the shelter they're closing, and he had distemper. i only had him for 2 weeks. i still miss him a lot. I'm just glad I gave him a good home and a lot of love before he left me.

I'm so glad this aweful shelter is being shut down.

yes, i agree...when i went to the shelter to get Guiness (my pup that passed on from distemper) i saw so many beautiful dogs there. there was this one dog, looked like a beagle, but was a mix i think because she was very tall and lean, she had the most beautiful dark beagle colors, and big, gorgeous dark brown eyes. i told my husband i wanted her, but unfortunately she was to big for my tiny apartment, and it wouldnt have been fair to keep her cooped up with no yard to run in. i wanted to take ALL those dogs home.

but after my experience with guiness, i couldnt bare to go back to a shelter and adopt, for fear of going through another painful 2 weeks watching a pup die from distemper (which was first misdiagnosed...long story) i was devastated because i had never had a pet die/put down before. my 5 dogs i had in NY (2 at my moms, 3 at my dads) are still alive and well.

Yes, they'll all have a lot better chance of finding a home now, and the living conditions at this new shelter are waaaaay better than the other one. The dogs will still be able to go inside and outside whenever they want because each individual kennel will lead to an open area, but the temps are computer controlled thank goodness. no more dogs sweating to death in the summer, or freezing to death in the winter.

i'm glad you're all happy about this too. at least i can come on here and have people understand my passion for animals. now i have another place to donate to besides the SPCA.

Thats great news! Something like that happenned here a few years ago.

But...I don't get that you didn't adopt the beagle mix b/c it was too big for your housing..yet you adopted a lab/chow mix puppy that is likely to get even bigger???

Because the beagle mix was already full grown and very big, but the lab/chow mix puppy was still very small and by the time it was full grown, we would've been moved out of our studio apartment and into a bigger one.

i do feel bad about not adopting the beagle though, because i'm a sucker when it comes to them, they're one of my favorite breeds. it just wouldn't have been very fair to the dog, ya know? somebody did adopt her though, because i called 5 days later and asked if she was still there, (i convonced my mother in law to get her) and the people at the shelter said she had already been adopted...so it turned out good in the end.
